Streamer Jack Doherty Faces Up to 7 Years in Prison if Convicted on All Charges
Streamer Jack Doherty could face up to seven years in prison if he’s convicted on all charges and receives the maximum sentences.
The Florida-based content creator was arrested over the weekend in Miami following a run-in with police while he was filming.
According to the arrest report, officers found what they described as “half of an orange oval shaped pill with a 3 on it,” which they said was “consistent with” an amphetamine. The authorities also discovered three hand-rolled “suspected cannabis cigarettes.”
Doherty was charged with three offenses: possession of a controlled substance for the amphetamine, possession of 20 grams or less of marijuana, and resisting an officer without violence. The first charge is a third-degree felony, while the other two are first-degree misdemeanors. Under Florida law, third-degree felonies can carry up to five years in prison, and first-degree misdemeanors carry up to one year.
If Doherty were to get the maximum sentence for all three charges, he could face seven years behind bars. However, experts say that is unlikely.
A report from Measures for Justice looking at Miami-Dade County data from 2012 to 2013 found that the median prison term for nonviolent felonies for first-time offenders was only 24 months. The same report noted that less than 8.5 percent of that group actually served any prison time, even though more than 58 percent were convicted.
Despite the arrest, Doherty has continued to stream online.
