Matt Reeves Just Revealed the Very First Shot of ‘The Batman Part II’ as Filming Officially Begins
Director Matt Reeves has officially confirmed that filming on the sequel has begun. The filmmaker shared a first look from the set, giving fans their first glimpse at the movie since it was announced several years ago.
The image quickly sparked discussion online because it appears to show a body lying on an autopsy table, although no details were revealed about the identity of the person.
The photo also featured an updated version of Robert Pattinson’s Batman logo, offering another small tease about the next chapter in Reeves’ Gotham City universe.
The update marks a major milestone for the project, which has faced multiple delays since the release of 2022’s The Batman. Now that cameras are rolling, excitement is building again around Pattinson’s return as the Dark Knight.
The new image has also added fuel to ongoing speculation about the film’s story and villains. While DC Studios has remained quiet about plot details, several casting rumors have surfaced in recent days.
According to various reports, actor Sebastian Stan has joined the cast. Early rumors suggested he would play Harvey Dent, the Gotham City district attorney who eventually becomes the villain Two-Face. However, newer reports claim Stan could actually be portraying Victor Zsasz, one of Batman’s most dangerous enemies.
The same rumors suggest that Brian Tyree Henry may instead be taking on the role of Harvey Dent. At this time, neither Reeves nor DC Studios has officially confirmed any of those reports.
Another major addition reportedly joining the sequel is Scarlett Johansson. Previous reports have linked her to the role of Gilda Dent, Harvey Dent’s wife in DC Comics. However, Warner Bros. Discovery has not publicly confirmed that casting information.
While fans are eager to learn who Batman will face this time around, one familiar villain will reportedly have a smaller role. Colin Farrell, who played Oz Cobb, better known as the Penguin, recently discussed his involvement in the movie during an interview with ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley.
Farrell revealed, “I’m only in two scenes, which is great because it means I can enjoy the rest of the film.”

His comments suggest that Reeves is shifting the spotlight toward new characters and possibly a different main villain for the sequel.
The secrecy surrounding the project has only increased interest among fans. With production now underway, many expect set photos and videos to begin appearing online over the coming months. Those images could provide the first real clues about the story, new characters, and the mysterious figure seen in Reeves’ filming update.
The Batman franchise remains separate from James Gunn’s main DC Universe and continues under the Elseworlds label. That means Pattinson’s Gotham exists in its own continuity, separate from the larger DCU that is currently being built.
Even so, 2027 is shaping up to be a huge year for DC fans. Alongside The Batman – Part II, Gunn’s new Superman era will continue to expand, giving audiences two different versions of DC’s biggest heroes on the big screen at the same time.
For now, though, attention remains firmly on Gotham. After nearly five years of anticipation, filming has officially begun, and Robert Pattinson’s Batman is finally one step closer to returning to theaters.
The Batman – Part II is scheduled to be released on October 1, 2027.
