Some actors are defined by a single look, and Brandon Sklenar has spent years building one. Dark hair, rugged charm, and a string of brooding leading-man roles made him a fixture of prestige TV and studio dramas. So when Brandon Sklenar and Hassie Harrison arrived together at the VMAs, the surprise wasn’t the pairing itself.

The two have been linked for months through Taylor Sheridan’s TV universe. Sklenar broke out as Spencer Dutton in ‘1923,’ and Harrison played barrel racer Laramie across the final three seasons of ‘Yellowstone.’ Fans of that world have been waiting to see them share the screen.

On Sunday, September 27, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, Sklenar stepped onto the carpet with a platinum, cropped blond haircut. His hair was shorter than usual, and his face was totally clean-shaven. The 36-year-old actor is best known for dark-haired roles in ‘1923,’ ‘The Housemaid,’ and ‘It Ends With Us.’

The rest of his outfit stayed simple. He wore a black leather bomber jacket over a white tank top, coordinating black trousers, oversized dark sunglasses, and snakeskin shoes. One outlet said the simple styling gave the platinum hair room to be the undisputed star of the ensemble.

Harrison walked the carpet beside him, also 36. She wore a black sheath dress with her blonde hair piled into an elegant updo. Together, the pair created a sleek all-black pairing that stood apart from the couture drama elsewhere on the carpet.

The joint appearance made sense for another reason. Both were scheduled to appear on stage, since Sklenar was part of a presenter lineup announced by CBS and MTV. That lineup included Charli xcx, Teyana Taylor, Troye Sivan, Tyla, and David Corenswet, and Just Jared also reported that Sklenar and Harrison would present together.

The reason for the duo’s appearance is their upcoming film, ‘The Rescue.’ The modern Western thriller centers on a former rodeo cowboy who sets out to bring his daughter home after she is kidnapped for ransom, with her devoted dog by his side. Sklenar and Harrison play a former couple who reunite to rescue their child.

Potsy Ponciroli, who directed ‘Old Henry,’ helms the movie from a screenplay by John Fusco. Paramount released the first trailer just days before the ceremony. The film is set for release in 2027, and one outlet said it is heading to theaters in January.

The casting was big news when it was first announced. Deadline described it as two of Taylor Sheridan’s most popular shows colliding, with Harrison joining Sklenar. The project was also one of the first films greenlit under Paramount’s new regime after the Skydance merger.

Sklenar has said his experience in the Sheridan world helped him prepare. He mentioned that he competed in a cattle cutting competition with Sheridan and other people from his shows, and that he felt very comfortable on a horse. That background gives the modern Western some built-in credibility.

Reaction to the new hair color was split in a friendly way. Some fans said they loved how the platinum look suited him, while others called it a bold change and liked seeing him try something different. A third group said they still prefer his dark-haired look.

That kind of division is common when an actor steps away from a signature image. Sklenar has spent years being cast as a rugged, dark-haired hero, so the shift was especially striking. Whether it’s a one-off or a sign of a new era, it got people talking.

The timing seems deliberate. With ‘The Rescue’ approaching and the trailer fresh, a memorable public appearance keeps him in the conversation. It also gave Harrison a chance to share the spotlight at one of the year’s biggest music events.
