Few comedy franchises have been asked about as often as ‘Grown Ups.‘ It has been more than 13 years since the last film, and fans have been waiting to see Adam Sandler’s group of lifelong friends back together. Every update on the ‘Grown Ups 3’ release window gets plenty of attention for exactly that reason.

The third film officially became real in May, when Netflix announced it during its upfront presentation. Sandler and Tim Herlihy wrote the script, and Kyle Newacheck, who directed ‘Happy Gilmore 2’ and ‘Murder Mystery’ for Sandler, is behind the camera. Production has been rolling ever since, but Netflix has not announced an official date.

That is why Chris Rock’s latest appearance matters. Speaking on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’ on October 5, Rock indicated that ‘Grown Ups 3’ is likely to arrive on Netflix in summer 2027. The comment spread quickly online, and it gives fans the clearest sense yet of when to expect the reunion.

The extended clip from the episode shows Rock covering a lot of ground. He talked about riding on a float during the Knicks championship parade, and about filming ‘Grown Ups 3’ with Sandler and the returning cast. He also discussed writing, directing and acting in his own film, ‘Misty Green.’

Rock’s timing is useful because it comes as production is entering its final stretch. A summer release would also fit the franchise’s roots. The original films center on a group of friends reuniting over a summer vacation.

Netflix confirmed the full cast on August 6 and revealed that cameras had started rolling in New Jersey. The production has since moved to Europe, with the Italian city of Turin redressed to look like Paris. Filming is expected to wrap on October 28.

The story itself is built around a European getaway. The official logline says that with their kids now grown up, the gang is free to go on the ultimate adventure. Reports suggest the friends travel with their significant others to spread the ashes of a deceased friend, though Netflix has not confirmed that detail.

The ensemble is huge. Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade and Rob Schneider all return, with Schneider coming back after sitting out ‘Grown Ups 2.’ Maya Rudolph, Maria Bello and Salma Hayek Pinault are also back as the leads’ partners.

New faces include Julie Bowen, Deon Cole and Bailee Madison. Familiar supporting players like Shaquille O’Neal, Colin Quinn, Tim Meadows, Cheri Oteri, Ellen Cleghorne, Nick Swardson and Jackie Sandler round out the cast. It is the kind of sprawling comedy lineup Sandler has built his Netflix partnership around.

The streamer is a natural fit for the project. Sandler has been under a production deal with Netflix for over a decade, resulting in more than 10 films and other projects, including ‘Happy Gilmore 2’ and 2 ‘Murder Mystery’ films. Because ‘Grown Ups 3’ is going straight to streaming, it will not face the box office pressure its predecessors did.

For context, the 2010 original grossed about $271 million worldwide, and the 2013 sequel took in roughly $247 million. Neither was a critical favorite, but both were commercial hits, and Netflix is clearly betting that a new generation of viewers, and the original fans, will want one more outing.

Rock’s comment points to a summer 2027 premiere, but it should be treated as a likely window rather than a locked date. Netflix has not announced an official release date, and it may not do so until filming wraps and post-production is further along. A teaser trailer or first official poster would be the next sign that the date is firming up.

For now, fans have a rough timeline and a very full cast to look forward to.

How do you feel about the Grown Ups gang returning for a third movie?
