‘Alien: Romulus’ Sequel Reportedly Dead in the Water After Behind-The-Scenes Fallout

Few horror revivals landed with the kind of confidence ‘Alien: Romulus’ did back in 2024. Fede Álvarez’s back-to-basics take on the franchise felt like a genuine course correction, proof that the Xenomorph still had life left in it decades after Ridley Scott’s original changed sci-fi horror forever.

That success made a sequel feel less like a hope and more like a certainty. Cailee Spaeny’s performance as Rain drew comparisons to a modern-day Ripley, and both she and co-star David Jonsson were expected to return for a follow-up that Álvarez himself had already begun developing.

That certainty has now collapsed. According to a new report from World of Reel, the ‘Romulus’ sequel has been indefinitely shelved and might not ever happen, with the outlet’s source describing Álvarez’s exit as having sent the entire project into a tailspin, leaving no current path forward for the film.

The unraveling reportedly traces back to a creative clash between Álvarez and Ridley Scott, who remains attached to the franchise as producer. Álvarez had wanted to bring back Michael Fassbender’s android character David for the sequel, with the actor said to be practically signed on and a final draft of the script already written, only for Scott to reportedly refuse to let the character appear in another director’s film.

That standoff is said to have derailed everything that came after. Rumors had circulated that Scott wanted to preserve David for his own potential future projects within the ‘Alien’ universe, and once that door closed, Álvarez departed the project entirely in September of last year, though he was expected to stay on as a producer.

The search for a replacement hasn’t gone smoothly, either. 20th Century Studios reportedly approached Michael Sarnoski, the director behind ‘Pig’ and ‘A Quiet Place: Day One,’ before those talks also fell apart, and more recent reporting suggested even that potential hire had gone cold amid continued creative interference from Scott.

There are other signs pointing toward the project’s uncertain future beyond the director search. 20th Century Studios has reportedly shifted its attention toward a separate, standalone ‘Alien’ film being written by Brian Duffield, unrelated to the ‘Romulus’ storyline entirely, suggesting the studio may be looking past Rain and Andy’s story rather than continuing it.

The cast’s own trajectories add another layer to the uncertainty. David Jonsson has since been cast as the new Black Panther in Marvel’s ‘Black Panther 3,’ while Cailee Spaeny is reportedly circling the role of Rogue in Marvel’s upcoming ‘X-Men’ film, meaning both leads of ‘Romulus’ now have major franchise commitments elsewhere even if the sequel were revived.

For a franchise that seemed to have finally found solid footing again, the quiet collapse of its most promising follow-up in years is a disappointing turn. Whether 20th Century Studios eventually finds a way to untangle the creative gridlock or simply lets the sequel fade away entirely remains to be seen.
