Showrunner Silka Luisa confirmed that a war had been building between 2049 and 2099, explaining to Entertainment Weekly that the humans ultimately lost that fight. That defeat has reshaped Los Angeles into a world where replicants now serve as the city’s power brokers while humans have been pushed into second-class status.
Michelle Yeoh leads the series as Olwen, a replicant Blade Runner facing the final days of her life, since replicants know the exact date they are set to die. Luisa described the character as heavily inspired by Roy Batty’s arc from the original film, though this time the story gets told from the replicant’s own perspective rather than through human eyes.
Opposite Yeoh is Hunter Schafer as Cora, a human fugitive who has spent her life running from Blade Runners and now must pretend to be one herself. Luisa explained that Cora has lost so much of her humanity through this constant survival act that the show’s central question becomes whether she can ever get it back.
Bringing the franchise’s established tone into this new chapter required outside expertise, and Luisa turned to Michael Green, who co-wrote ‘Blade Runner 2049,’ to help shape the series.
