Brandon Sanderson’s sci-fi story Skyward is officially getting a TV series adaptation. The news comes from Deadline, which reports that Tomorrow Studios will develop the project. The company is also known for adapting other major titles like One Piece and Let the Right One In.

The project already has key creators attached. Author Brandon Sanderson will help write the pilot episode together with Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, who are known for their work on shows like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Dollhouse. All three will also serve as executive producers. They will work alongside Tomorrow Studios leaders Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements.

Sanderson spoke about the adaptation in a statement shared through Deadline. He said the project has been a long time coming and something he has wanted for years.

“I’ve been working on the Skyward series for nearly a decade, and to have a partner like Tomorrow Studios to help bring this story to television is a dream come true,” Sanderson said.

Adelstein also shared his excitement about the series. He described the world Sanderson created as full of big ideas and strong characters.

“Brandon has created a thrilling universe where courage, curiosity, and determination to challenge what we think can change the fate of entire worlds. The vision that he, Jed and Maurissa have for a television adaptation is ‘defiant to the end.’”

Skyward is the first book in a larger sci-fi series called the Cytoverse. The story takes place far in the future on a planet under constant attack by alien forces known as the Krell. It follows a teenage girl named Spensa who dreams of becoming a fighter pilot and protecting her world, even though many people doubt her.

The book first came out in 2018 and quickly became popular with readers. It later grew into a full series with several sequels and related stories. The series includes multiple novels and novellas that expand the world and characters over time.

The TV adaptation is expected to focus mainly on the first book for now. No streaming platform or network has been confirmed yet, according to Deadline’s report. However, the involvement of Sanderson himself and experienced TV producers suggests the project is being built carefully from the ground up.

This announcement also comes during a busy time for Sanderson’s work on screen. His wider fantasy universe, known as the Cosmere, has already been picked up for future film and TV projects by Apple TV, showing growing interest in adapting his books for live-action storytelling.
