On November 10, 2023 ‘The Marvels’ was released, and despite the prognosis for the movie being generally unfavorable, expecting low box office and mixed reviews no one could have prepared us that the movie would shatter some pretty infamous records. Being the lowest-grossing Marvel Studios movie of all time up to this point.

Various combinations of factors affected the success of the movie. The reception was mostly mixed, meaning that even among the critics, the view on whether the movie was good or not in the first place was vastly polarizing. Many fans outright stated that the effects of superhero fatigue are to blame and the fact that writing quality has decreased severely from MCU’s golden days.  In an unprecedented decision, even Iger commented on the bomb of the century admitting that the studio needs to focus more on quality over quantity, and soon after that stemented it was revealed that ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ would be the only movie to be released in 2024, in an attempt to revitalize the interest and the franchise.

But how did Brie Larson react to all of that? During the 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards in an interview with ET Larson was asked to comment on her potential MCU future, and she answered with grace and realistically.

I think there’s still so much inside of Carol. I feel like getting to be on this team just cracked her open in a way that she hadn’t been, and I really loved that for her. I just loved her letting the shoulders drop a little bit, and not needing to feel like all the responsibility was on her. So I think that there is just so much more to go…

Larson was never the most popular choice for Captain Marvel as the actress was disliked from the start she was described as being racist & sexist and following some of her speeches, the fans called for her to be recast despite Larson showing incredible determination to get in shape for the role. The movie turned out to be highly successful. ‘Captain Marvel’ broke many records in its first week in theaters as the most successful movie with a woman in the main role, but the dislike for Larson remained.

However now that ‘The Marvels’ flopped her performance wasn’t all that commented with fans mostly recognizing that the whole movie was the issue, as the story, villain, setting, and overall experience were subpar.

While Ms. Marvel did set up a future for herself in the MCU by recruiting the Young Avengers who are being developed into a standalone project as we speak, we have to assume that one of MCU’s strongest superheroes will make an appearance in the future as well.
