Captain America Returns: A New Beginning from Chip Zdarsky and Valerio Schiti Hits This July, Variant Covers First Look Revealed

A brand-new Captain America comic is coming this summer, and Marvel fans have a lot to be excited about. Starting July 2, writer Chip Zdarsky and artist Valerio Schiti are teaming up for a fresh take on the Star-Spangled Avenger in Captain America #1.
This new series kicks off with a story set just after Steve Rogers wakes up from being frozen in ice. It’s before he ever met the Avengers, and that time in his life is about to be explored in a totally new way. The choices Steve makes in this early mission will have major consequences, not just for his past, but also for what comes next in the present.
Zdarsky told Newsarama, “I’m having a blast. I’ve got the same feeling as I did when I started Daredevil, where each issue felt incredibly special, so I hope people feel the same way when they finally get to read it.” He added that the first storyline might be set in the past, but it’s going to shake things up for future issues too.
In this first adventure, Steve finds himself facing a big decision. The world he wakes up to is not the same one he remembers. It’s full of secrets and shadowy conflicts. When Doctor Doom rises to power in Latveria, Steve has to figure out how to respond. Does he adapt to this new kind of war, or does he stick to what he believes in? What he decides here will define his path going forward.
Along with the new story, Marvel is also giving fans a bunch of different covers for the first issue. The main cover is by Ben Harvey. There are also variant covers by Valerio Schiti, who shows off Cap’s new suit in one of them. Chip Zdarsky even drew one himself. Other big names like Frank Miller and Pablo Villalobos have contributed covers too.
Some covers take fans back in time. There’s a special Hidden Gem cover using classic art from John Romita Sr., pulled from Marvel’s 1976 Bicentennial Calendar. John Romita Jr. also has a Hidden Gem cover, and Luciano Vecchio did a version that recreates the classic Bicentennial art.
Nick Bradshaw created a Retrovision cover inspired by old-school comics, and there’s even a variant based on the Marvel Rivals video game made by NetEase Games.
So whether you’re here for the story or the awesome cover art, Captain America #1 is shaping up to be a big deal. Zdarsky and Schiti are promising a bold start, and with Steve Rogers caught between the past and the future, it sounds like this new run could take the character in some surprising directions.
