Chris Mundy Explains Why Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan Is Older in DCU’s “Lanterns”
The upcoming DCU series Lanterns is drawing attention for its unusual take on Hal Jordan, with showrunner Chris Mundy explaining why the character is being portrayed at an older age than fans are used to.
Mundy recently spoke about the creative decisions behind the HBO Max series. Lanterns is part of James Gunn’s new DC Universe and is set to premiere on August 16. The show focuses on two Green Lanterns working together on Earth: veteran Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler, and newer recruit John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre.
One of the main talking points since early development has been the decision to make Hal Jordan significantly older than in most previous comic and screen versions. In the interview, Mundy explained that this choice was intentional and tied to the story they wanted to tell.
“We wrote Hal at an age that isn’t typical for superhero stories,” Mundy said. “And doing that felt like a way to get at a fear of replacement that doesn’t normally come in these types of shows.”
According to Mundy, this version of Hal Jordan is not just a standard mentor figure. Instead, the story uses his age and experience to explore pressure, change, and the idea of being replaced in a role he has held for a long time. That dynamic becomes central when he is paired with John Stewart, who represents a newer generation of Green Lanterns.
The series itself is set on Earth rather than in space, which is another major shift from traditional Green Lantern stories. The plot follows Hal and John as they investigate a mysterious murder in the American heartland. The grounded setting is meant to make the characters feel more human and less focused on cosmic battles.
While some fans have speculated that Hal Jordan’s age could signal a limited role or even a possible exit from the story, nothing like that has been confirmed by the creators. Mundy’s comments suggest that the focus is more on character dynamics than on rewriting the core identity of Hal Jordan.
Alongside Chandler and Pierre, the series also features Kelly Macdonald, Garrett Dillahunt, Jason Ritter, and Nicole Ari Parker in supporting roles. The show is written and developed for television by Tom King and Damon Lindelof as part of DC Studios’ broader plans under James Gunn.
For now, Lanterns is shaping up to be one of the most character-focused entries in the new DCU lineup, with Hal Jordan’s older portrayal playing a key role in its story and themes.
