Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Tracking for Massive Box Office Opening
Christopher Nolan’s next epic is already shaping up to be one of the biggest movie events of 2026. According to early box office tracking reported by Deadline, The Odyssey is expected to open between $80 million and $100 million in North America when it arrives in theaters on July 17. While that is still an early estimate, it shows just how much excitement there is for Nolan’s latest film.
The projected opening comes after the movie made headlines for selling out 70mm IMAX screenings and premium format tickets nearly a year before its release.
Those early sales have surprised many in the industry and suggest that audiences are eager to experience the film on the biggest screens possible. The Odyssey will also have a three-week exclusive run in IMAX theaters, giving it another advantage during its opening weeks.
Even with strong presales, Deadline notes that predicting a Christopher Nolan opening weekend is never easy. The filmmaker’s last movie, Oppenheimer, was originally expected to earn between $40 million and $50 million during its first weekend.
Instead, it shocked the industry by opening to $82.4 million before going on to become one of the biggest films of 2023. Some believed the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon helped boost those numbers, but this time Nolan’s latest movie will have the spotlight to itself as the only major studio blockbuster opening that weekend.
The Odyssey features one of the biggest casts Nolan has ever assembled. The film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus alongside Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, Charlize Theron and Jon Bernthal. The large ensemble has only added to the anticipation surrounding the project.
According to Deadline, early audience tracking is already looking very strong. The film is performing especially well with men over the age of 25, slightly ahead of where Oppenheimer was at the same stage before release. Overall audience interest is also ahead of Oppenheimer and on par with Project Hail Mary, another major upcoming release.
If The Odyssey reaches the higher end of its projected opening, it could become one of the biggest opening weekends of Nolan’s career. His current domestic opening records belong to The Dark Knight Rises with $160.9 million, followed closely by The Dark Knight with $158.4 million. Oppenheimer currently ranks among his biggest openings as well.
Strong openings have never been the only reason Nolan’s movies succeed. Many of his films continue attracting audiences for weeks after release. Oppenheimer finished with more than $330 million in North America after opening with $82.4 million. Inception followed a similar path, earning nearly five times its opening weekend total during its theatrical run.
Industry analysts believe this summer could be one of the strongest in years. Deadline reports that the combination of The Odyssey and Sony and Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which opens two weeks later, could help push the North American summer box office to around $4.2 billion. If that happens, it would be the biggest summer movie season since 2019.
For now, The Odyssey remains one of the most anticipated releases of the year. While its final opening weekend remains uncertain, the early numbers reported by Deadline suggest Christopher Nolan could be preparing for another major box office success.
