Disney’s long-gestating live-action reimagining of one of its most beloved modern classics is officially entering its final stretch. In Disney’s live-action take on the Oscar-nominated animated adventure, Moana answers the ocean’s call and voyages beyond the reef of her island of Motunui with the demigod Maui on an unforgettable journey to restore prosperity to her people. It is a story audiences have already fallen in love with once, and now the studio is betting they are ready to experience it all over again.

The film stars Dwayne Johnson, Catherine Laga’aia, John Tui, and Frankie Adams, and has been rated PG for action and peril, some scary images, rude humor, and brief thematic elements. It is directed by Emmy and Tony Award winner Thomas Kail and produced by Dwayne Johnson, Beau Flynn, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, and Lin-Manuel Miranda.

The assembled team carries considerable weight, with Kail having previously helmed the celebrated filmed stage production of ‘Hamilton.’

The @DisneyStudios account announced on June 10 that tickets are now on sale for ‘Moana,’ alongside a final trailer, with the film set to arrive exclusively in theaters on July 10. This extended production timeline gave the studio ample room to perfect the visual effects and honor the rich source material. The film also lands on the tenth anniversary of the original animated feature, adding a layer of sentimental significance to its theatrical debut.

At the heart of the film is a genuinely exciting piece of casting history. Catherine Laga’aia, upon being announced in the title role, described Moana as one of her favorite characters and spoke openly about how meaningful the role is to her Pacific Islander heritage, noting her Samoan roots through both her grandfather and grandmother.

Original voice actress Auli’i Cravalho, who stepped aside to allow another young Pacific Islander woman to take on the part, serves as an executive producer and told Entertainment Tonight she cannot wait for audiences to witness this passing of the baton.

The road to opening night has not been without turbulence. An earlier trailer drew heavy backlash on YouTube, with dislikes climbing to 85,000 against 37,000 likes, as many fans questioned whether the remake was necessary so soon after ‘Moana 2.’

Criticism targeted the visual rendering of Johnson’s Maui in particular, with some viewers drawing comparisons to AI-generated imagery and taking issue with his line delivery. Still, skepticism has rarely slowed Disney’s live-action machine, and the broader landscape tells a compelling counter-story.

With ‘Moana 2’ having posted a massive opening weekend and a global haul surpassing one billion dollars, expectations and curiosity for the live-action version remain sky-high, even amid the mixed response to earlier footage.

Disney has emphasized ongoing consultation with Pacific Islander communities throughout production, and the use of practical ocean filming combined with cutting-edge visual effects promises a cinematic scale the animated version could not achieve.

Whether the final trailer shifts the conversation and wins back hesitant fans remains to be seen, but the ocean has officially called and the tickets are waiting. Do you think this live-action ‘Moana’ can win over the skeptics, or has the internet already made up its mind before a single reel rolls in theaters?
