House of the Dragon season 3 is moving toward its release with strong early attention and very positive first reviews.

The new season is scheduled to premiere on HBO on June 21. It will have eight episodes and continues the adaptation of George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, which is part of the larger A Song of Ice and Fire universe. The season was officially ordered on June 13, 2024, just days before season 2 even premiered, showing HBO’s early confidence in the series.

Production on season 3 took place from March to October 2025. Ryan Condal is the sole showrunner for this season, continuing to guide the direction of the story. HBO also confirmed that a fourth season has already been ordered, with plans announced in November 2025.

Early reviews for season 3 are now arriving, and the reception has been strongly positive overall. Based on 11 early critic reviews, the season currently holds a 100 percent score in initial ratings. These reviews come from a mix of entertainment outlets that have seen early episodes.

Critic Grace Randolph from Beyond the Trailer described the season in very positive terms. She said, “After a frustrating S2, House of the Dragon S3 is truly worthy of flying the Game of Thrones banner. Top notch across the board…” She also highlighted a performance from Emma D’Arcy, suggesting it could become one of the standout roles of the series so far.

Not all reviews are completely uniform in tone, though most still lean positive. Jeremy Mathai from Slashfilm gave a more mixed reaction, rating the season 6 out of 10. He noted that while the show focuses heavily on spectacle, bigger visuals do not always improve the storytelling.

Other critics had more balanced praise. Lissete Lanuza Sáenz from Fangirlish said the season seems more focused and intentional in its storytelling direction. Matthew Jackson from Looper gave it a 9 out of 10, calling it strong and emotionally gripping television that keeps viewers engaged throughout.

Therese Lacson from Collider rated it 8 out of 10 and described it as impressive television despite some uneven moments. Joonatan Itkonen from Region Free gave it 4 out of 5, saying the season feels more chaotic than earlier ones but still delivers a powerful fantasy experience.

Overall, early reactions suggest that the show has recovered from criticism aimed at its previous season. Many reviewers point out that the story feels more focused and confident, even if it still includes large-scale battles and political tension.

The series continues to build on the world of Westeros, focusing on the Targaryen civil war and the struggle for power between competing factions. With season 3 already generating strong early buzz and a confirmed fourth season on the way, HBO is clearly continuing its long-term investment in the franchise.

As the premiere date approaches, more full reviews are expected, but the early response shows that season 3 is already being seen as a return to form for the series.
