A first look at Sinestro in Lanterns has been revealed in a new trailer released today. The character is played by Ulrich Thomsen, who joins the cast as Thaal Sinestro, a former member of the Green Lantern Corps. In the story, Sinestro is known for later forming the Yellow Lantern Corps, a group that uses fear as a source of power instead of will.

This version of Sinestro continues a storyline that fans may already recognize from earlier DC projects. The character was previously played by Mark Strong in the 2011 film Green Lantern, where he served as a mentor to Hal Jordan before turning against the Corps.

Showrunner Chris Mundy spoke to Entertainment Weekly about how Sinestro fits into the new series. He explained that the show is more focused on relationships and influence between characters rather than only building a traditional villain storyline. He said, “Obviously, in the canon, Sinestro’s the big bad. The thing that interests us is this idea [that] Hal was trained by Sinestro, and Hal is training John.”

Mundy also explained that the series looks at how training and influence shape the characters over time. He described it as a kind of passing-down effect between mentors and students. He said, “In the coaching tree, we’re very interested in what gets passed on, what doesn’t, and how much is human nature. We talked a lot about programming and parenting and training…What did Hal take away from Sinestro that was good or bad? It brings up a lot of interesting worries.”

In Lanterns, Sinestro’s role is expected to connect directly to Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler, and John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre. The story follows the two Green Lanterns as they investigate a strange murder in Nebraska that slowly develops into a much larger mystery.

Reports also suggest that Sinestro may appear throughout the entire season. This has led to speculation that his role could be more important than just a supporting villain. Some reports also hint that the series is structured in a way that could allow multiple seasons.

Ulrich Thomsen also commented on his involvement, suggesting that his role may continue beyond just one appearance, although no details were confirmed.

The series is part of the new DC Universe project led by DC Studios. It is expected to mix superhero elements with a grounded crime investigation style. According to the production team, the story will also expand beyond Earth at certain points, which could connect directly to Sinestro and other cosmic elements of the Green Lantern mythology.

Lanterns is currently scheduled to premiere on August 14 on HBO. The trailer released today gives the first real glimpse of Sinestro in this new DC Universe, but many details about his full role are still being kept secret.
