First ‘Supergirl’ Reviews Are In — Milly Alcock Steals the Show
The first reactions to “Supergirl” have arrived, and the early response from film journalists has been mostly positive. According to reactions shared by members of the press following an early screening, the movie delivers a different kind of superhero story and gives Milly Alcock a strong chance to shine in the lead role.
The film is the second movie in James Gunn’s new DC Universe following the success of “Superman” last year. While “Superman” introduced audiences to a brighter side of the franchise, many critics say “Supergirl” takes things in a rougher and more dangerous direction.
Several journalists compared the movie’s style to the “Mad Max” franchise. Mike Ryan was one of those who highlighted that change, writing that the film “looks and plays more like a ‘Mad Max’ movie, with dirty worlds, gross villains and a self destructive hero.” The comparison suggests that audiences can expect a tougher and less polished setting than what is usually seen in superhero films.
Milly Alcock’s performance as Kara Zor-El, better known as Supergirl, has been one of the most praised parts of the movie. Journalist Simon Thompson said Alcock does a great job in the title role and also praised Jason Momoa’s appearance as Lobo. He wrote, “It isn’t a classic but it’s fun and hits most of the targets it aims for. Milly Alcock is great as the titular heroine and Momoa’s Lobo is a blast. Other big wins are the action, humor and when it leans into physical production.”
Germain Lussier of Gizmodo and io9 also reacted positively to the film. While he said it may not reach the same emotional level as “Superman,” he still enjoyed the experience. Lussier wrote, “It doesn’t quite have the resonance of ‘Superman,’ but it acts as both a perfect companion and follow-up to that movie with better characters and more complex relationships. It’s also incredibly emotional, which makes the action hit even harder.”
The movie is based on Tom King’s comic book series “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” and is directed by Craig Gillespie. The story follows Kara as she joins an unexpected ally on a journey across space after a dangerous enemy attacks someone close to her. The adventure mixes revenge, justice and personal struggles as Supergirl faces new challenges.
Alongside Alcock, the film features Matthias Schoenaerts as the villain Krem of the Yellow Hills. Eve Ridley plays Ruthye Marye Knoll, a young girl who asks Supergirl for help after her father is murdered. The cast also includes David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham and Jason Momoa as the fan-favorite character Lobo. David Corenswet is expected to appear as Superman as well.
Speaking to Variety in a recent cover story, Alcock explained why she decided to take on such a major role. She said, “I looked at myself in the mirror, and I was like, ‘Who am I to turn down this opportunity? I knew that it was what I needed to do, because it scared me. And I thought, ‘Well, I get one big, bad, beautiful life. Why not fucking go for it?’ Just fucking go for it! What are you, scared? Get over yourself.”
Based on these first reactions from journalists and critics, “Supergirl” appears set to continue the positive momentum of James Gunn’s DC Universe when it arrives in theaters on July 26.
