Guy Ritchie has given a new update about a possible third “Sherlock Holmes” movie, and fans of Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law finally have something to think about again. The original films turned the classic detective story into something more modern and action-heavy, and they became big hits when they came out.

The first “Sherlock Holmes” movie arrived in 2009 and showed Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes and Jude Law as Dr. John Watson. The two characters were shown as close partners who also argued a lot, but still worked together to solve dangerous cases.

The sequel, “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” came out in 2011 and continued that same style with bigger action and a stronger focus on Professor Moriarty as the main threat. Since then, fans have been waiting for a third film for more than a decade.

The information comes from an interview Guy Ritchie did with Collider’s Steve Weintraub while promoting his new film “In the Grey.” During the conversation, he was asked if his newer work, including “Young Sherlock,” means the Downey Jr. version is finished.

Ritchie said he still wants to make it happen and made it clear he has not moved on from the idea. “I’d love to,” Ritchie said. “I adore Downey, and I adored making those two movies. Look, I think it’s just honestly a question of just aligning our schedules. I know the appetite for it’s there, but the appetite for it from our side is there, too. So, we’d love to make that happen. I just don’t know how it’s going to happen. It’s amazing that it hasn’t happened.”

The two “Sherlock Holmes” movies were both major box office successes. The first film made more than 500 million dollars worldwide, and the second one did even better. Even with that level of success, a third movie has never been officially made, mostly because of timing and busy schedules for the cast and director.

The original cast also included Rachel McAdams as Irene Adler, Eddie Marsan as Inspector Lestrade, Kelly Reilly as Mary Morstan, Mark Strong as Lord Blackwood, and Jared Harris as Professor Moriarty. These characters helped build the world around Holmes and Watson and made the films feel like a full universe of crime and mystery.

Right now, Ritchie is working on several projects at the same time, which also makes scheduling difficult. He is involved in new films and TV projects, including crime stories and other action-focused productions. According to Collider, this busy schedule is one of the main reasons the third “Sherlock Holmes” film has not moved forward yet.

The update does not confirm that the movie is happening, but it also does not close the door. For now, it stays in the same place it has been for years, with interest from everyone involved but no clear timeline for production.
