Miles Morales is currently one of the most popular characters in the Marvel Universe. In the continuation of the great animated movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, we got a long-awaited sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse movie, that was released in June of this year. Nevertheless, Miles Morales has an interesting story in movies and Marvel Comics, so we will explore his character. Specifically, we will discuss Miles Morales’ academic side and see his grade in the movies.
Miles Morales is a sophomore in high school in the ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ movie. In ‘Across the Spider-Verse movie,’ Gwen Stacy hints that it has been one year and four months since she last saw Miles, and the main protagonist confirmed at his father’s party he is 15 years old. Miles is a talented student, so he is already a sophomore at Brooklyn Visions Academy, which is inspired by the real-life high school in Brooklyn, New York.
We will discuss this topic further by mentioning where Miles was left off in the first movie and try to speculate on the grade of the character based on Miles’ age, which we already discussed on Comic Basics. Moreover, we will connect Miles’ education to the real-life U.S. educational age system. If you are interested, stay with us until the end.
Miles is definitely older in the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
If we look back at 2018, one animated movie overshadowed the rest of its competition – Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Most fans consider Into the Spider-Verse the best Spider-Man movie ever made, which is factually correct.
The way the movie was produced, animated, and, more importantly, brought their characters to life was extremely good, which propelled some amazing animated projects in the years to come. Miles Morales was already a fan-favorite character in Marvel Comics, and his immortalization on the big screen was executed best.
If we look into Miles’ origin story and how it differentiates from the comics, there aren’t many changes. Miles Morales is a teenager living in Brooklyn, New York, with his parents Rio and Jefferson. He has an uncle named Aaron, who has a criminal history behind him, and Miles becomes Spider-Man after being inspired by the deceased Peter Parker and his Aunt May.
The Spider-Verse event is mostly similar to the Marvel Comics, and most importantly, the characters are spot-on in the animated movie. In the original movie, Miles Morales is speculated to be 14, which is slightly different from the comic book lore, where Miles is a 13-year-old boy.
As it usually is with Spider-Men, Miles Morales is extremely intelligent and a great student, fully supported by his parents. At the beginning of ‘Into the Spider-Verse,’ Miles Morales transfers from Brooklyn Middle School to Brooklyn Visions Academy, which puts Miles at 14 years of age. It’s given that Miles is a gifted student who most likely enrolled in school earlier than his peers.
However, the ‘Across the Spider-Verse’ movie makes Miles Morales older, stronger, and taller, making us speculate more about his academic endeavors.
Miles Morales is a sophomore in the ‘Across the Spider-Verse’ movie
Anyone who watched the ‘Across the Spider-Verse’ movie noticed how Miles is more mature and how his body has changed since the first movie. He is taller, stronger, and most definitely older. However, we never got confirmation from the showrunners about how old Miles is or what grade he attends.
As viewers, we could speculate or assume by subtle hints in the movie or even the knowledge of the comic book lore. However, knowing that ‘Into the Spider-Verse’ was released in 2018 and it took five years to develop a sequel, it definitely makes sense that Miles is older in the second movie, which means he progressed academically.
As we already mentioned, Miles was 14 years old in the first movie, and his young years were emphasized by the school he attends – Brooklyn Visions Academy.
This prestigious private school only lets talented students enroll, and Miles was among them in 2018. That being said, Miles being older in the second movie puts him in high school. Why? Well, if Sony follows the U.S. education age system at all, which I would speculate they do, the middle schoolers are mostly between 12 and 14 years of age before high school.
However, since we know that Miles Morales is a talented student with great scores, it’s given that the boy enrolled earlier in the school than other “ordinary” kids. Moreover, Brooklyn Visions Academy is a private school for talented children and was inspired by the real-life institution Midwood High School.
Besides the obvious older looks, in the movie, we see Peter B. Parker meeting Miles once again, this time with a daughter. If we look into Peter in the first movie, he was divorced from Mary Jane, and after his adventure with Miles, he vowed to make everything right again with his ex-wife. The first movie also hinted at Peter B. Parker’s wanting to have a child, and when he appears with the baby in ‘Across the Spider-Verse’ movie, the time skip is obvious.
Moreover, Gwen Stacy confirms at the beginning of the movie that one year and four months have passed since she last saw Miles Morales in “flesh,” setting a timeline of the movie and helping us speculate the main character’s age and school grade.
Miles Morales himself confirms he is 15 years of age at his father’s party, where he says to his parents that he can take care of himself. Brooklyn Visions Academy is essentially a high school, and knowing he already transferred in the original movie, we can speculate that Miles is a sophomore in high school.
