“I Was Literally Sobbing”: Brutal Netflix War Movie Leaves Viewers Devastated
A Danish war film available on Netflix has quietly built a strong fan base in recent years, with many viewers comparing it to major war classics like Saving Private Ryan.
The film is titled The Shadow in My Eye, also known internationally as The Bombardment. It was released in 2021 and later arrived on Netflix in 2022. The movie was written and directed by Ole Bornedal and features actors including Alex Høgh Andersen, Fanny Bornedal, and Danica Curcic.
Unlike many traditional war films that focus heavily on battle strategy or frontline combat, this story takes a different approach. It is based on a real event from World War II and focuses on civilians caught in the middle of military action.

The plot centers on Operation Carthage, a British Royal Air Force mission carried out on March 21, 1945. The goal of the operation was to target Nazi positions in Copenhagen. However, the mission went wrong in a tragic way when one of the bombs accidentally struck the Jeanne d’Arc School.
According to the historical account referenced in the film, 123 people were killed in the disaster, including 87 children. This event becomes the emotional core of the movie and shapes the stories of multiple characters living in the city.
The film follows several residents of Copenhagen whose lives are connected through the bombing. It shows families, children, and other civilians as they experience fear, loss, and confusion during one of the darkest moments of the war. The focus is less on soldiers and more on the people who had no control over the violence happening around them.
Because of this approach, the film is often described as deeply emotional and difficult to watch. It does not present war as heroic or exciting, but instead highlights the suffering it causes for ordinary people. Many viewers have noted that the story feels realistic and emotionally heavy, especially because it is based on true events.
Critics have responded positively to the film’s emotional impact and storytelling style. One critic described it as “potent and deep,” while another called it “an important story and an uncompromising portrayal of the brutality of war.” Another review said, “If you think you can handle the heavy subject matter, this is a thoughtfully made film worth watching.”
Audience reactions have been just as strong. One viewer wrote that the film was “absolutely fantastic, heartbreaking and intense,” while another said it was “unlike any other war film.” A particularly emotional comment read, “This film destroyed me. This is one of the best war films I have ever seen. By the end I was in complete emotional chaos, I was literally sobbing.”
These reactions highlight how strongly the film connects with viewers. While it is not a typical blockbuster war movie, it has gained attention for its emotional storytelling and its focus on civilian tragedy rather than battlefield action.
The Shadow in My Eye continues to find new audiences through Netflix, where it remains a notable example of how war stories can be told from a deeply human perspective.
