Is Aemond Targaryen Secretly a White Walker? The Wild ‘House Of The Dragon’ Theory Explained

Fans of ‘House of the Dragon‘ have spent years staring at Aemond Targaryen’s icy blue eye and wondering if there’s more to it than meets the eye, quite literally. The one eyed prince turned king has become one of the show’s most divisive figures, and his striking sapphire replacement has fueled a corner of the internet convinced he might be tied to Westeros’ coldest villains.

The theory that Aemond Targaryen is secretly connected to the White Walkers has picked up steam again thanks to social media, with fans openly asking whether his glowing blue eye is a sign of something far more sinister than grief or vengeance.

The Origin Of Aemond’s Blue Eye Obsession

The theory traces back to season one, when Aemond removed his eye patch to reveal a sapphire in place of the eye Lucerys Velaryon’s dragon took from him. The reveal led to confusion and questions over whether the blue eye meant Aemond was becoming a White Walker, since he shares their piercing icy blue stare.

That single visual choice was enough to send fans into theory mode. On social media, viewers openly asked why Aemond’s eye was blue like that and wondered if he might secretly be the Night King, while others acknowledged the resemblance while admitting the characters clearly aren’t the same.

Interestingly, the show itself seems to be winking at the connection rather than avoiding it. The sapphire genuinely does resemble a White Walker or wight eye, and that appears to be a deliberate choice, since one of the earliest wights in George R.R. Martin’s books has eyes explicitly described as blue as sapphires.

Why The White Walker Theory Doesn’t Hold Up In House Of The Dragon

Despite the eerie visual parallel, the actual mechanics of Westeros lore make the theory nearly impossible. White Walkers aren’t set to make their move for over 150 years after the events of ‘House of the Dragon’, which puts a massive timeline gap between Aemond’s story and any real threat from the Others.

The origin story of the White Walkers themselves also works against Aemond. ‘Game of Thrones’ already showed exactly how the first White Walker was made, when the Children of the Forest transformed an unnamed mortal man by stabbing him with a dragonglass dagger, and that human face effectively closes the door on any Targaryen becoming the Night King later on.

Even entertainment outlets that have dug deep into the theory admit it is more fun than factual. Some writers have called the compiled evidence for Aemond or Daemon becoming the Night King as flimsy as a sneeze, noting the theory only gained real traction after Aemond’s more villainous turn in season two.

How Daemon’s Vision Fueled More White Walker Speculation

Aemond isn’t the only Targaryen fans have tried to connect to the White Walkers. The season two finale featured Daemon experiencing visions tied directly to ‘Game of Thrones’, including glimpses of the Three-Eyed Raven, Daenerys after her dragons hatched, and a White Walker that seemed to hint at future events.

That sequence reignited an older fan theory that has circulated since the prequel began. Daemon’s Season 2 finale vision hinted at a potential connection between the Night King and House Targaryen, in part because every other figure he sees in the vision is also a Targaryen.

Some fans have taken the theory even further, imagining the rogue prince surviving his fatal battle with Aemond and returning generations later as Westeros’ iciest villain. The fact that Daemon’s body is never actually found after his battle with Aemond in the books has left just enough ambiguity for fans to joke that he becomes the White Walker king, even though the timeline makes it essentially impossible.

What This Means For Aemond Targaryen Going Forward

For now, showrunners appear more interested in using the imagery symbolically than literally. Giving Aemond a blue eye that visually echoes a White Walker seems designed to connect Rhaenyra’s two looming threats, the war happening in front of her and the prophesied danger from the far North, while also adding a haunting new layer to Aemond’s own character.

Whether or not the show ever explicitly ties Aemond, Vhagar, or the greens to the Others, the lore explicitly separates House of the Dragon’s civil war from the White Walker threat by well over a century. The prequel itself has only briefly acknowledged White Walkers so far, with one Stark character simply responding “death” when asked what lies beyond the Wall, suggesting the show is keeping that mystery firmly on the horizon rather than in the present story.

So is Aemond Targaryen secretly a White Walker in disguise? So far, the evidence says no, but with ‘House of the Dragon’ still willing to tease Westeros’ coldest mythology through visions and symbolism, fans are eager to see how far the show pushes that connection. Do you think Aemond’s sapphire eye is just a haunting coincidence, or is George R.R. Martin’s world quietly setting up something far bigger for the greens?
