Is Tom Hiddleston Done Playing Loki After Season 2?
The ending of season 2 of ‘Loki’ seems to be the greatest ending that any MCU project could ever deliver, especially because there were a lot of different implications with the character’s concluding storyline. This means that there’s a huge possibility that Loki, as a character, will remain in his current role for all time, always (pun intended), especially because we know how important his new burden is. But what does that mean for Tom Hiddleston? Is Tom Hiddleston done playing Loki after season 2?
Loki got the perfect ending
One of the things that fans know about Loki is that he has had a lot of different endings to his character, especially since he’s died quite a few times already. Of course, while the Loki in the ‘Loki’ series isn’t the same one who died and cheated death in ‘Thor: The Dark World’ or the one who actually died in ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ we do know that Tom Hiddleston has played this role for nearly a decade and a half already.
Of course, in season 2 of ‘Loki,’ Hiddleston gave justice to the character’s story arc by delivering one of the most emotional performances from a former villain. We got to see a deeper side to the Loki character, especially after Loki became more honest about the things that he wanted in life and how he never wanted to be alone. But at the same time, he has always bragged about how he was burdened with a glorious purpose.
The huge burden came to fruition in the season 2 finale when Loki was in the middle of a huge loop that never had a true ending as far as the fates of his friends were concerned. No matter what he did, Loki understood that He Who Remains always won, especially because the Temporal Loom turned out to be just a failsafe that brought He Who Remains back to power.
So, in what was the greatest heroic moment for Loki, he gave himself up to become the new “Loom” as he destroyed the old one to take its place. To that end, he became the god that he needed to be by using his powers to regulate the different timelines in the multiverse. Loki stayed at the end of time and got the throne he always wanted while serving the glorious purpose of saving the timelines, keeping He Who Remains out of power, and giving his friends the freedom they deserved.
In short, season 2 of ‘Loki’ had the best possible ending anyone could ever imagine, as Loki now needs to stay at the end of time to make sure that someone is there to watch over and regulate the different timelines. But while he did admit that he never wanted to be alone anymore, he was essentially alone to carry a burden that he knew only he could carry. It was a fantastic closure to Loki’s character development as everything went full circle for him.
Loki’s ending seems to be final
At this point, it does seem that the ending to Loki’s storyline is now final. Loki was able to save his friends from He Who Remains’s wrath and the Temporal Loom’s effects. At the same time, he now had the glorious purpose he always thought he had. Even though he didn’t love the outcome of his life, he still understood the importance of his new role.
In a way, it seems counter to Loki’s own character development to bring him back at some point in the future or to allow this very same Loki character to appear in another MCU project. Marvel Studios is yet to announce whether or not this would be Tom Hiddleston’s final MCU project, and it doesn’t appear that there will be an announcement in that regard anytime soon.
But as for Loki’s sacrifice, this seems to be something that will stay permanent because his new role is to serve as the one regulating the timelines as a true god in every sense of the word because he is now the one overseeing the multiverse. Having him return at some point will defeat the purpose of his character development.
Nothing is ever certain in the MCU
One of the things that we know about the MCU is nothing is ever certain, especially if the actors themselves have never said anything about them being done with their roles. There have been a few actors who have declared that they will never return to their MCU roles, but Hiddleston has yet to say anything in that regard.
So, at this point, the possibility of Tom Hiddleston returning in the future is still very much up in the air because nothing is ever certain in the MCU, especially with the different timelines and universes present.
With a huge multiversal event happening in a few years, there is a good chance that every character we have ever seen in the MCU will return in one form or another. Loki’s chances of returning may be difficult to fathom due to his new role as the one overseeing time. But there’s nothing that prevents us from believing that Tom Hiddleston will return at some point in the future. Only he can decide whether or not he will reprise his role as Loki in another MCU project.
