James Gunn Confirms ‘Lanterns’ Episode Runtimes — Here’s How Long Each Chapter Will Be
TV fans are getting a clearer idea of what to expect from the upcoming superhero project Lanterns, especially when it comes to format and runtime.
One of the latest updates comes from DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn, who recently spoke about how the new series will be structured.
According to comments from James Gunn, each episode of Lanterns will run for about one hour. He shared this information while responding to a fan on Threads who questioned why the project is not being made as a movie instead of a series.
The fan asked, “Why isn’t this a movie???” and Gunn replied with a simple explanation: “You want to sit through an eight hour movie?” His response confirms that the project is designed as a full series rather than a single long film.

Lanterns is an upcoming DC Universe show created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King for HBO. It is based on the Green Lantern characters Hal Jordan and John Stewart from DC Comics. The series follows the two Lanterns as they investigate a mysterious murder on Earth, which slowly leads them into a much larger and darker case.
The show is part of the new DCU under DC Studios, with Gunn and Peter Safran leading the overall direction of the franchise. It is also the third television series in this shared universe and is expected to play an important role in setting up the tone of future DC projects.
The main cast includes Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart. Kelly Macdonald also stars as Kerry, a local sheriff who becomes involved in the investigation, while Nathan Fillion appears as Guy Gardner, another Green Lantern with a more aggressive personality.
The series was originally developed in 2019 under Greg Berlanti, but it was later reworked after Gunn and Safran took over DC Studios in 2022. The new version was officially announced in 2023, with a shift toward a darker, detective-style story inspired by shows like True Detective and Slow Horses. HBO later ordered the project, and filming took place in 2025 in Los Angeles.
Other cast members include Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro, Garret Dillahunt as William Macon, and Poorna Jagannathan as Zoe, among others. The story blends superhero action with mystery and crime drama elements, making it different from traditional Green Lantern adaptations.
The series is scheduled to premiere on August 16, and will have eight episodes in total. With Gunn confirming that each episode is around one hour long, the full season will play out like a long-form story rather than a compact film.
Based on Gunn’s comment and the creative direction described by DC Studios, Lanterns is clearly being shaped as a slow-burn, detailed narrative. Instead of rushing the story into a movie format, the team is choosing to expand it across multiple episodes to explore both characters and the mystery at its core.
