Matthew Lillard recently talked about a very strange moment in his career that turned out to be surprisingly positive. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he opened up about the flood of support he received after Quentin Tarantino publicly criticized his acting during a podcast appearance late last year.

At the time, Tarantino casually dismissed Lillard’s work, along with Owen Wilson’s, and also took a shot at Paul Dano. The comments spread fast online and quickly became a big topic among movie fans. Instead of staying quiet, many people rushed to defend Lillard, which caught him completely off guard.

Lillard said the response felt overwhelming in the best way possible. He compared it to living through your own wake, explaining that it felt like watching people celebrate your life while you are still around to see it. He added that he could not imagine a more lovely reaction and admitted the whole thing left him emotional.

What surprised him even more was who spoke up. Fans were loud, but so were people he had worked with over the years. Director Mike Flanagan called him one of the best actors working today. James Gunn, who directed him in the Scooby-Doo movies, said Lillard was both a great actor and one of his favorite people. Even George Clooney chimed in during an awards event, saying he would be proud to work with any actor Tarantino mentioned.

Lillard joked that he kept showing the comments to his wife just to prove people still liked him. He said everyone has their own taste, and criticism is part of the job, but the amount of love he saw was beautiful. He also pointed out that comments like that usually are not aimed at huge stars like Tom Cruise, which helped put things in perspective.

Paul Dano later thanked the public for defending him as well, saying it allowed him to stay out of the drama. For Lillard, the whole situation flipped from something painful into one of the most meaningful moments of his career. It reminded him that his work mattered to people, even if one famous director did not connect with it.

Right now, Lillard is enjoying a major comeback. According to industry buzz, some fans are even calling it a Lillard-sance. He recently returned as William Afton in Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, which became a big box office hit in December 2025.

He is also set to appear in Scream 7 as Stu Macher, a role many fans never thought they would see again. The film arrives in theaters on February 27, with Neve Campbell and Isabel May also starring.

Outside of horror, Lillard is expanding into new territory. He joins the Marvel universe in Daredevil: Born Again season two on Disney+, plays Principal Grayle in Mike Flanagan’s Carrie series for Prime Video, and recently finished filming Tony Gilroy’s Behemoth! alongside Pedro Pascal and Olivia Wilde.

Do you think Matthew Lillard is most loved for his time as Shaggy, or is his horror legacy what truly made fans rally around him? Share your thoughts in the comments.
