MCU’s ‘Ghost Rider’ Rumor Mill Heats up as Rosamund Pike Reportedly Circles Important Role

Marvel’s Ghost Rider movie has barely been confirmed to fans, and it is already generating the kind of speculation usually reserved for projects deep into production. Ryan Gosling’s casting as the flame-skulled antihero was one of the bigger surprises to come out of Marvel’s recent slate reveals, and ever since that announcement, fans have been hungry for any scrap of information about who else might be climbing aboard. With no official casting confirmed beyond Gosling himself, the rumor cycle has stepped in to fill the void.

That speculation took a notable turn this week with word that the film may already be circling its female lead.

According to Jeff Sneider’s InSneider newsletter, Rosamund Pike is currently the top contender to play Johnny Blaze’s love interest in Shawn Levy’s ‘Ghost Rider.’ Sneider described Pike as an age-appropriate pick for the role, noting that she is 47 to Gosling’s 45.

It’s worth stressing that ‘Ghost Rider’ is not actively casting yet, and Sneider’s report indicates the project currently sits further down Marvel’s priority list. Even so, the scoop has already sparked plenty of excitement, particularly since it would mark a reunion of sorts for Pike and her ‘Ladies First’ co-star Sacha Baron Cohen, who Sneider also reports is set to reprise his Mephisto role from the ‘Ironheart’ series inside ‘Ghost Rider.’

Beyond the potential casting, Sneider’s reporting sheds some light on where Gosling’s Spirit of Vengeance actually fits into Marvel’s broader plans. Per the InSneider newsletter, Gosling’s Ghost Rider is expected to make his first MCU appearance in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ in 2027 before headlining his own solo film, which is currently eyed for a release sometime in either May or July of 2028.

Sneider also reports that Gosling will specifically be playing Johnny Blaze, and that he’ll reportedly be the only version of Ghost Rider featured in the film, rather than sharing the role with fellow Rider Danny Ketch.

That last detail resolves a question that had lingered since Gosling’s casting was first revealed, since Marvel Studios notably declined to confirm which iteration of the character he’d be playing. As for the villain situation, Sneider did not identify a confirmed antagonist for the film, though Blackheart, Mephisto’s son from the comics and the 2007 ‘Ghost Rider’ movie, remains an obvious candidate if the new film borrows from that same blueprint.

There’s also chatter that Marvel wants to weave Nightcrawler into ‘Ghost Rider’ in some capacity, according to Sneider’s sourcing, potentially using the film to lay groundwork for other X-Men characters ahead of a future team-up movie. None of these threads have been confirmed by Marvel Studios itself, and given how early this stage of development appears to be, plenty could still change before actual casting decisions are locked in.

For now, the idea of Pike stepping into Johnny Blaze’s orbit gives fans something concrete to latch onto while they wait for more official details. Her pairing with Gosling would bring two accomplished, similarly aged leads to a franchise that has struggled to find its footing on the big screen since Nicolas Cage’s earlier outings as the character. Whether that chemistry ends up matching what worked so well between Pike and Baron Cohen in their prior collaboration remains to be seen.
