‘My Adventures With Green Lantern’ Gets a Key Update as ‘Lanterns’ Fans Wait on Season 2
HBO’s ‘Lanterns’ premiered in mid-August with Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, who investigate a murder case in the Midwest with extraterrestrial connections. The show had one of the biggest launches on HBO Max and earned a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.
That success has left Green Lantern fans in an odd spot. HBO has yet to make an official renewal announcement, so the franchise’s next chapter is arriving from a very different direction.
That direction is animation. Polygon flagged on X that HBO’s new Green Lantern series has received an important update, and the story behind that post points to ‘My Adventures With Green Lantern.’ DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran has confirmed that the first season will have 10 episodes, the same count as ‘My Adventures With Superman.’
Safran also spoke about how the two shows relate. He said the spinoff is tonally similar to its predecessor, though thematically different because it deals with different characters and lore. In other words, the warmth that made the Superman show a hit is meant to carry over.
There is another detail in the update that is easy to miss. Safran revealed that the animation for the upcoming show is already under review, which suggests production has moved well past the planning stage.
The story itself is a big swing for a character fans know well. The series centers on Green Lantern Corps member Jessica Cruz, a character who first appeared on ‘My Adventures With Superman.’ It was announced in February 2025, and Auli’i Cravalho returns to voice Jessica, a teen chosen to join the Green Lantern Corps.
The tone is also a clear departure from the space-cop approach of the live-action show. A preview shown at Annecy revealed that Jessica sings the Green Lantern oath while undergoing a magical girl-style transformation. The show will fuse Green Lantern lore with magical girl anime elements and follow Jessica at Hal Jordan Memorial High and in her training under Kilowog.
Her supporting cast looks just as interesting. Classmates Alex DeWitt, Nikki Jones, Thomas Rowe and Kyle Rayner are set to play key roles in Jessica’s personal life, and the series will introduce redesigned Red and Yellow Lanterns. Executive producer Jake Wyatt has said Kyle was the young gun Lantern of his day, and that Alex, the girlfriend who was notoriously killed in the comics, will be a main character.
The update also has consequences for another DC fan favorite. Speaking to Collider to promote ‘Clayface,’ Safran said the future of ‘My Adventures With Superman’ is uncertain, and that season 4 is yet to be determined as the creative team puts its efforts into the spinoff. In his words, Safran told Collider, “Up in the air right now.” He did not announce a cancellation, but he also did not confirm more Superman adventures.
The two shows are still closely connected. Wyatt has confirmed that ‘My Adventures With Green Lantern’ is set in the same timeline as the Superman series and will expand and explore that universe. Whether Superman characters could appear in the spinoff remains only a possibility.
What fans still don’t have is a date. A premiere date has not been announced. Until one arrives, the 10-episode order, the early animation work and a very different kind of Green Lantern story are the clearest signs of where DC’s lantern lineup is headed.
