Superman fans have spent the last few weeks buzzing about ‘My Adventures with Superman,’ but not for the reasons anyone expected. Instead of celebrating a fresh renewal, the animated series finds itself in a strange holding pattern right as its third season hits its stride.

The beloved take on Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Jimmy Olsen has built a devoted fanbase since it first landed on HBO in the summer of 2023, and now everyone wants to know if a fourth season is actually coming.

Season 4 Renewal Status Still Up in the Air

As of now, there is no official word on whether ‘My Adventures with Superman’ will return for a fourth season. My Adventures with Superman’s future fate is uncertain, as there is no news about a possible Season 4 yet from Adult Swim’s president. That silence has left fans parsing every quote from network executives for hints.

Season 3 is currently airing new episodes on Adult Swim, but the show’s future got a concerning update as Season 4 remains uncertain at this point.

The timing stings a bit, since the current batch of episodes has been widely praised, making the lack of clarity around a renewal feel especially frustrating for longtime viewers.

Season 4 of ‘My Adventures with Superman’ remains undecided, with Adult Swim awaiting input from James Gunn and Peter Safran, which adds an interesting layer of stakes to how this current season lands with audiences. Every episode from here on out could effectively double as a renewal pitch.

James Gunn and Peter Safran’s Role in the Decision

The people actually holding the keys to Season 4 are not at Adult Swim at all. Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen revealed it is actually in DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran’s hands, saying, “We don’t know yet, it’s their job now.”

Speaking with Collider, Ouweleen elaborated further, explaining that the show started before Safran and Gunn came in, so the network needs to hear from them about it, adding that it “cohered with what they were doing,” and that it was already in the works when they looked at it and decided to keep going. That is a promising sign on its face, but it also underlines how much the show’s fate now hinges on decisions made well above the animation studio.

Where to Watch ‘My Adventures With Superman’ Season 3 for Free Right Now

Because ‘My Adventures with Superman’ is a previous show being folded into DC Studios’ plans, it may not be one that Gunn and Safran see fit to continue when looking at their wider future. The looming Paramount and Warner Bros. merger only adds another layer of uncertainty to how quickly, or slowly, a decision might actually come.

Importantly, ‘My Adventures with Superman’ was not included in DC Studios’ previously announced animated slate, which features projects like the Absolute Batman series, a new Krypto show, a Starfire series, and a Joker anime, because the show began before the DC Studios regime change.

Season 3’s Strong Performance Could Sway Things

If ratings and buzz mean anything, ‘My Adventures with Superman’ has a strong case for renewal. The show has been a hit among critics and audiences throughout its first two seasons, earning a perfect 100 percent from critics and a solid 80 percent from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

Ouweleen himself did not hold back his enthusiasm for how the series has performed. He highlighted the talent of series creator and showrunner Josie Campbell, noting that the show does great and that whenever it premieres on streaming, it “pops a little bit,” adding that he is glad the team found a good home for it on Adult Swim’s Toonami block.

The animation itself has also taken a noticeable leap this season. Studio Grida is handling animation for the third season, a change from the Studio Mir setup used in the first two seasons, and the production shift has been widely noted by critics and fans for how visually elevated the new season feels. Ouweleen described the season as one that “goes harder, looks bigger, and packs the emotional punch that makes this series such a standout.”

The show has also expanded well beyond its original home, airing across markets in Canada, Latin America, the United Kingdom, and Japan, with a DVD release for the first season arriving in the United States in May 2024. That kind of international footprint is exactly the sort of thing that tends to make renewal conversations easier.

What Could Come Next For the Series

Even without a confirmed Season 4, the creative team has already been dreaming about where the story could go. Showrunner Brendan Clougher previously joked that they were hoping for two more seasons and a movie, revealing that when they pitched Season 3 to the studio, they pitched it alongside ideas for a potential Season 4 as well. He added that there are ideas in the canon to go far beyond that, if they are lucky enough to get there.

There is also a growing universe forming around the show that could strengthen the case for its survival. A spin-off series titled ‘My Adventures with Green Lantern’ was announced in February 2025, set in the same timeline and focused on Jessica Cruz, a teenager chosen to join the Green Lantern Corps. Showrunners confirmed the spin-off is “chugging along,” with episodes actively being shipped during production.

Story-wise, this season has already been laying groundwork that fans hope gets a proper payoff down the line. Jake Wyatt confirmed the season explores the question of “What’s a Superman,” with Clark wanting to settle down with Lois while she remains laser focused on not losing her star reporter status at the Daily Planet. The showrunners have also stated they are looking to adapt storylines that have become legendary in Superman’s history, including ‘The Death of Superman’ and ‘Reign of the Supermen.’

Given the strength of the reviews, the growing animated universe around it, and the sheer amount of story left to tell, a cancellation would feel like a genuine gut punch to the fandom that has rallied around this version of Clark Kent. For now, all eyes are on James Gunn and Peter Safran, and every new episode of Season 3 doubles as fresh evidence for why ‘My Adventures with Superman’ deserves to keep flying.

What storylines are you hoping Season 4 tackles if Gunn and Safran give this animated Metropolis the green light?
