Netflix revealed the project on June 15 through Tudum, giving fans their first official details about the adaptation. The announcement has already generated excitement among readers who have been waiting to see the beloved story make the jump from page to screen.

The series is being developed by Amanda Lasher, known for her work on Gossip Girl and Togetherness. Lasher will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Jade Bartlett, whose previous credits include Road House and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, is also attached as a writer and executive producer.

Lasher shared her excitement about adapting the novel, saying, “I have been a fan of steamy YA since the seventh grade, reading Judy Blume stealthily hidden behind a textbook. I love this genre, and it’s been a joy working with Jade, the team at Unwell, and Netflix to bring Hannah Grace’s beloved Icebreaker novel to the screen.”

Bartlett also spoke about what drew her to the story and its characters.

“It’s been such a joy to play in Hannah Grace’s world of Icebreaker, a story filled with ambitious, talented, and undeniably sexy characters. But the real special sauce is that, above all, they are good, deeply compassionate people … and we cannot get enough of them,” she said.

She added, “Hannah has created the kind of world you want to live in, and Amanda and I are having an absolute romp with our incredible teams at Unwell and Netflix, bringing this cherished story to the screen.”

The adaptation comes after the enormous success of Grace’s novel. Icebreaker spent 70 consecutive weeks on The New York Times bestseller list and has sold nearly five million copies worldwide. The book has also been translated into 24 languages and released in dozens of countries, making it one of the biggest romance publishing success stories of the decade.

Netflix executive Jinny Howe announced the project during the BANFF World Media Festival and explained why the company wanted to adapt the novel.

“Netflix has a long history of turning beloved romance novels into massive global hits. We know our members can’t get enough of these stories, which makes Icebreaker the perfect next chapter for us,” Howe said.

While a release date and cast have not yet been announced, the news confirms that one of BookTok’s biggest romance stories is officially heading to Netflix. For fans of sports romance, figure skating, hockey, and slow-burn love stories, Icebreaker is already shaping up to be one of the platform’s most anticipated upcoming series.
