Netflix is officially heading back to the American frontier, and this time the journey looks nothing like the version longtime fans grew up watching. The streamer’s fresh take on ‘Little House on the Prairie’ is set to premiere on July 9, and the cast list reads like a whole new chapter of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s world rather than a straight copy of the beloved original.

The reimagining comes from Rebecca Sonnenshine and stars Alice Halsey, Luke Bracey, Crosby Fitzgerald, and Skywalker Hughes. With the premiere date closing in fast, curiosity about who exactly makes up this new Ingalls household, and which unfamiliar names are joining them, has only grown louder across social media and fan forums.

Meet the New Ingalls Family Cast

Ten year old actress Alice Halsey was cast in the role of Laura Ingalls, with Luke Bracey, Crosby Fitzgerald, and Skywalker Hughes joining shortly after as Charles, Caroline, and Mary respectively. Bracey plays Laura’s father Charles Ingalls, known affectionately as Pa, and he brings credits from ‘Elvis,’ ‘Hacksaw Ridge,’ and ‘Little Fires Everywhere’ to the role.

Fitzgerald steps into the role of Caroline Ingalls, or Ma, following her work on ‘Crime 101’ and ‘Palm Royale,’ while Hughes takes on Mary Ingalls, Laura’s older sister, after appearing in ‘I, Object.’

Together the four actors anchor a story that follows the Ingalls family and their dog Jack on a wagon journey from Wisconsin to Kansas as they leave their comfortable home behind to build a new life on the prairie.

Casting Laura herself was clearly treated as a major milestone for the production, and the excitement around Halsey stepping into such an iconic literary role has already become one of the most talked about elements of the show’s rollout.

‘Little House Reboot’ Season 2 and New Neighbors Joining the Story

The world of ‘Little House on the Prairie’ expands well beyond the family’s own wagon, and Season 1 introduces the settlers and Osage community who share the frontier alongside them. Warren Christie appears as John Edwards, Jocko Sims plays Dr. George Tann, Meegwun Fairbrother portrays Mitchell, Alyssa WapanatÇŽhk plays White Sun, Wren Zhawenim Gotts plays Good Eagle, and Xander Cole rounds out the group as Little Puma.

Additional cast members joining the reboot include this same ensemble of settlers and Osage characters, all introduced through first look photos before the show’s debut. Rather than simply repeating old character dynamics, the adaptation expands the story beyond the Ingalls family’s own perspective, showing the Osage people who have long called the prairie home as the family arrives on land they were told was free.

Netflix’s confidence in this expanded ensemble seems to be paying off already. A second season was announced in March 2026, well ahead of the first season even premiering, with new casting additions including Willa Dunn as Nellie Oleson, Rachelle Lefevre as schoolteacher Eva Beadle, and Charlotte Sullivan as Margaret Oleson, Nellie’s mother.

That kind of early renewal signals a real vote of confidence from the streamer, and it means viewers meeting these new neighbors this July already know there is more of their story coming.

‘Little House on the Prairie’ Premiere Date and What to Expect

Mark the calendar, because Netflix’s reimagining of the Little House books is set to premiere on July 9. The novels themselves have sold more than 73 million copies worldwide and have been translated into at least 27 languages, which gives some sense of just how much cultural weight this new version is carrying into its debut.

Inspired by the third book in Wilder’s semi-autobiographical series, the first season blends family drama, survival story, and origin tale of the American West, according to Sonnenshine, who has described the material as a timeless coming of age story she has read many times since childhood.

That framing suggests this version wants to honor the source material’s emotional core even while reshaping its scope.

Behind the scenes, executive producers include Joy Gorman Wettels, Trip Friendly, Dana Fox, and Susanna Fogel, with Friendly’s own father having produced the original NBC series that ran from 1974 to 1984. That family connection running through the production adds an interesting layer of continuity even as the show charts its own path.

Fan Reactions to the New Little House Cast

Not everyone is convinced the reboot needs to stray from Walnut Grove nostalgia. Comment sections under early coverage show longtime viewers expressing mixed feelings, with some saying they have watched the original series countless times and remain skeptical that a new version without familiar faces like Doc Baker or the Olesons as they remember them will hold the same appeal.

Original cast members have weighed in too. Melissa Gilbert, who played Laura Ingalls Wilder throughout the entire original run, said in February 2025 that she had no issue with the new adaptation, noting there was plenty of room for someone else’s interpretation. Alison Arngrim, who originated the role of Nellie Oleson, told ReMIND that this version is not really a reboot returning to Walnut Grove but something distinct.

Whether skeptics come around once they actually see Halsey, Bracey, Fitzgerald, and Hughes in action remains an open question, but the sheer size of this new prairie world, from the Ingalls homestead to the Osage families and Independence settlers, gives the show plenty of room to win people over on its own terms.

Which of these new faces has you most excited, or most wary, about Netflix’s version of the Ingalls family and their prairie neighbors?
