DiscussingFilm dropped a jaw-dropping stat this week, reporting that ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is now tracking for a domestic opening weekend somewhere between 230 million and 250 million dollars, a number that would place it among the biggest theatrical debuts of the decade.

The figures come from Box Office Pro’s long-range forecast, and they represent a significant jump from earlier projections that had the film in the 180 million to 190 million dollar range just days earlier.

Box Office Pro’s official long-range forecast lists Spider-Man: Brand New Day with a domestic opening weekend range of 230 million to 250 million dollars, noting that franchise IP has had a rough July with underperformers like Supergirl and Moana, a trend this film appears poised to reverse. Analyst Jeff Sneider had also predicted a debut between 225 million and 245 million dollars in his newsletter, and even that figure may have undersold where the film is now trending.

Presales have been a major driver behind the escalating projections. Domestic presales had already crossed 40 million dollars with weeks still remaining before release, with some global projections for opening weekend reaching as high as 550 million dollars worldwide. Box Office Theory analyst Shawn Robbins described the film as summer’s final S-tier blockbuster tentpole, pointing to the Spider-Man brand’s staying power across eight live-action films and two hit animated releases over more than two decades.

What makes the tracking even more impressive is the format disadvantage the film is working around. Brand New Day will not have access to IMAX screens during its opening frame, since those premium auditoriums remain committed to Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey through an exclusive window, meaning the film is generating historic demand without one of the tools that typically boosts opening weekend numbers.

If the higher end of the range holds, the film would land just below the franchise benchmark. Spider-Man: No Way Home took in 260.1 million dollars domestically in December 2021, and a 250 million dollar opening for Brand New Day would come in just under that mark while still representing a massive win for Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios. Even the more conservative end of tracking would put Brand New Day ahead of Deadpool and Wolverine’s 211.4 million dollar debut and well clear of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and The Fantastic Four First Steps.

Do you think ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ can become one of the biggest openings of the decade?

Sentiment around the film has been building for weeks, with test screenings reportedly going over extremely well, and some early reactions comparing it to Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 as the best film in the wall crawler’s history. Deadline has also confirmed the film posted the strongest first day United States presales of any release in five years, a record previously held by No Way Home.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo, and Sadie Sink. The film swings into theaters on July 31, and if these tracking numbers hold anywhere close to their current trajectory, it looks set to deliver one of the defining box office stories of the entire year.
