Star Wars: Gold Lightsaber Meaning & the Most Famous Users Explained

As every fan of the series will know, the lightsaber is one of the most popular items from the Star Wars franchise, however, you actually look at it. Used by the Jedi and the Sith as a weapon, a lightsaber can come in various shapes and sizes, including different colors. Some of these colors are more common (green and blue, while red is common among the Sith), while others are especially rare. In this article, we will address one of those rare colors, as we will tell you about the gold lightsaber.

The gold lightsaber is an exceptionally rare lightsaber color that has, as far as it is known, been seen only once in the history of the Jedi Order. Although it is unknown whether it is as unique as the Darksaber, only one gold lightsaber has been seen in the series, and it was the one owned by Jedi Master Qu Rahn; this lightsaber was given to him by Master Yoda. Due to its color, it is very similar to a yellow lightsaber, which was seen in Rey’s hands in the movies, but the gold lightsaber is a bit darker, so there is a difference after all.

The rest of this article will tell you all you need to know about the gold lightsaber. You will know what it was when it appeared, what it represents, and what it says about its owner, as we have already written when we wrote about the Darksaber in Star Wars. On top of that, we will also tell you about the only known owner of a gold lightsaber, Jedi Master Qu Rahn, so you will find out everything you need to know in one place. Spoilers will be present, so be careful how you approach the article.

The golden lightsaber is rare, almost unique, and is a symbol of exceptional skill

As we have stated, the lightsaber is a very popular item from the Star Wars franchise. It is used as the main weapon by the Jedi and the Sith and has been present since the first movie premieres. Initially, we saw only three colors – Green, Blue, and Red – but as the universe grew, more colors were introduced, both in the movies and TV shows (purple, yellow, white, orange) and in other Star Wars-inspired works (all the other colors we’ve seen).

Now, the colors, as you know, aren’t just for show, as they have a meaning and tell us a lot about the users and their skills. The Kyber crystals change color based on the personality and the skills of the user, so the color of the lightsaber also represents the user; in the most basic example, Sith lightsabers are red because their Kyber crystals become red because of the pain and hatred they feel, i.e., they are a representation of their blood that flows out of their injured psyches.

So, having said that we, of course, have to add that even the gold lightsaber has a symbolic meaning, although it has not been fully explored in the series. Namely, the gold lightsaber has appeared only once in the series and in the Legends universe, so its symbolism has not been explored in a way that would completely suit our needs, but we know some facts about it.

As stated, this lightsaber was given to Jedi Master Qu Rahn by Master Yoda. As far as we know, it is a unique lightsaber, as no other Jedi is known to have had a gold lightsaber save for Qu Rahn, which shows how Yoda respected him. This is because it is very difficult to find a gold Kyber crystal owner, as the lightsaber is very difficult to use unless you have certain skills.

The golden color represents the purity of one’s Force, i.e., only those who are very loyal to the light side of the Force will be able to handle a gold lightsaber. This, of course, requires a very high level of determination and fixed moral values, as the user has to be nigh incorruptible to wield this weapon. On top of that, it is a fact that those who have a gold lightsaber will always find the right solution to a problem, no matter how complex or dangerous.

Gold lightsaber

And that’s about it, as far as this section of our article is concerned. Sadly, this is all we know about the meaning of the gold lightsaber, but we have collected as much data as possible and provided you with a good overview of the whole situation. We can now continue.

Known users of the gold lightsaber

As we have said, the gold lightsaber has been seen only once in the series, and it was owned by a legendary Jedi Master whose story is to be found in the Legends universe; he is part of the canon, but there are more details about him in the Legends universe than in the canon. He is Master Qu Rahn, and we will tell you about him here.

Qu Rahn

Qu Rahn was a Jedi who served the Republic in its waning years and fought against the Empire after its establishment. He was an exceptionally skilled Jedi, and after the downfall of the Republic, he went into hiding and later sought out Master Yoda, who taught him the secret of how to live on as a Force Ghost.

Yoda also told him the story of the Valley of the Jedi, so Qu Rahn aimed to find it and free the spirits trapped there. He would later join the Rebel Alliance as one of the rare Jedi to actively participate in the rebellion against the Empire. This is, of course, why he was often a target of the Inquisitors.

Ultimately, he was found by the Inquisitor Jerec and his band of Dark Jedi; Jerec managed to kill him in that fight, but since Qu Rahn was taught by Master Yoda how to live on as a Force Ghost, he came back as one of the series. We have to stress out that this story is from the Legends universe and that the new canon might end up changing some details about his story.
