Apple TV+’s Sugar is returning for its second season with a noticeable shift in tone and genre direction, as both the showrunner and star Colin Farrell discuss how the series is evolving after its major sci-fi reveal.

According to an interview with ScreenRan, showrunner Sam Catlin explained that Season 2 will lean more into both comedy and science fiction elements, while still keeping the core identity of the series intact. Sugar originally begins as a neo-noir detective story centered on John Sugar, a private investigator in Los Angeles investigating the disappearance of a young girl.

However, the first season later introduces a major twist: Sugar is not human. The character, played by Farrell, is revealed to be an alien, changing the entire framework of the series and recontextualizing earlier events. This reveal is now shaping how the show moves forward in Season 2.

Catlin said that while the shift allows for more creative freedom, the goal is not to completely change the show’s tone. Instead, the focus is on expanding what was already there in subtle ways. He described Farrell as naturally suited for the direction the show is taking, saying he is “comedically genius.”

Catlin explained, “We weren’t worried that he was going to be able to do it, but it had to be done in a way that didn’t feel like we were changing the entire tone of the show, but that I think some of his humor comes from him being a little bit on the back foot in certain places.” He added that the new season keeps the same emotional grounding but allows more room for humor to come through character behavior and awkward interactions.

Colin Farrell also spoke about his approach to Season 2, noting that he did not intentionally try to play the character as comedic. Instead, he focused on Sugar’s personality changes as the story develops. With new character dynamics introduced, particularly through Laura Donnelly’s character Charlotte Fischer, Sugar is placed in situations where he is less controlled and more emotionally exposed.

Farrell described the shift in his character’s behavior, saying, “He’s lost at sea a little bit… and the words aren’t coming the way he wants them to come.” He added that while the moments may appear humorous to viewers, he personally viewed them as emotionally grounded scenes, saying there was “a sweetness” in those interactions.

As Season 2 begins, the writers are also leaning further into the science fiction aspect of the series. Catlin explained that revealing Sugar’s alien identity allows the story to move beyond secrecy and focus more on how the character interacts with the world around him. He said, “We actually felt a degree of relief knowing that we could start with, ‘Okay, he’s an alien, he’s from outer space… and now let’s have life come at him.’”

The cast for the new season includes returning lead Colin Farrell, along with Jin Ha, Raymond Lee, Tony Dalton, Sasha Calle, and Shea Whigham. The series, which debuted to strong critical and audience reception in its first season, was praised for its neo-noir style and visual presentation, even earning award recognition for cinematography.

Now returning on Apple TV+, Sugar Season 2 aims to balance its detective roots with expanded sci-fi storytelling and a more flexible tone, as it continues exploring what happens when an alien investigator tries to navigate human life with new emotional and narrative complexity.
