The latest movie based on DC properties — ‘The Flash’ — has recently premiered in theaters, and the first box-office numbers do not sound too promising. Ahead of the movie’s release, some reports said that the movie was tracking to earn $70 million domestically in its first weekend, but in the end, the movie grossed only $55 million, which is $12 million less than last year’s ‘Black Adam,’ which was also deemed a box-office bomb due its high budget and expensive marketing.

While it remains to be seen how those weak numbers will affect future DC projects (the worst-case scenario would be that the sequel won’t happen), we are already looking ahead to the next DC projects. DCEU still has two more movies left to be released this year before the soft-reboot franchise DCU takes over, and we’re all waiting to see how many DCEU stars will have the chance to reprise their roles in DCU. One of the stars the fans hope to see in DCU is Sasha Calle, who debuted in ‘The Flash’ as Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl.

Sasha Calle shares her wishes for Supergirl’s future on the big screen!

Will Sasha Calle return as Supergirl? Since the official premiere of ‘The Flash,’ that became a million-dollar question among the fans. Calle received praise for her performance, and even those fans who criticized the movie agreed that she was one of the best parts. However, the movie’s ending didn’t give us any definitive answers, and while we know there’s a ‘Supergirl’ solo movie in development, without the official announcement, the chances that Calle would reprise the role in that movie are currently fifty-fifty.

When we look at all the actors that took part in ‘The Flash,’ Calle was definitely the most important star during the marketing campaign. She never tried to hide she’s a massive fan of superheroes, and in a recent interview for Entertainment Tonight, she shared her enthusiasm for potentially reprising the role in future DC projects.

“I hope so. I love her so much and I feel her very deeply. I think this movie was a runway to a better story for her. […] I know that they’re doing ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.’ I just want to dive deeper into Kara and her feelings into her day-to-day. […] I would just love to see her in regular clothes, in human clothes. As a fan, through the whole time that I was filming, I kept thinking, ‘What would she wear? What glasses would she wear?’”

Where Did Supergirl Come From in ‘The Flash’ Movie?

James Gunn officially announced ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ earlier this year as one of the five movies that take place in DCU’s Chapter 1: Gods & Monsters. However, it was never officially announced that Calle has signed to return, and given that we still don’t know how much of a reboot DCU will be after the conclusion of DCEU, we can’t be sure what James Gunn and Peter Safran have in mind for this upcoming universe. If Henry Cavill weren’t part of their plans, we’d say that no DCEU star is safe to keep the job.

The following paragraph contains spoilers for ‘The Flash’!

Supergirl in ‘The Flash’ movie was depicted as Superman’s cousin from an alternate reality in which General Zod killed Kal-El while he was still a baby. Despite all the tries by Barry and his alternate self, this universe couldn’t have been saved, and Barry had no other choice but to undo what he did by giving up on trying to save his mother. This also erased Michael Keaton’s Batman and Calle’s Supergirl from the continuity. And while we know that another actor will be picked for Batman in DCU, the situation with Supergirl is complicated because we don’t know if James Gunn plans to keep Calle for future projects.

The original ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ is a limited comic book series published in eight issues between August 2021 and April 2022, written by Tom King and illustrated by Bilquis Evely. The series follows Girl of Steel as an alien girl asks her to take revenge against the bad guys that destroyed her planet, leading into a character-defining space journey.

It’s unknown if the upcoming homonymous will be based on that certain storyline, but it will be interesting to see what James Gunn and Peter Safran prepared for the character of Supergirl in the upcoming movie, hopefully with Sasha Calle as the title star.

‘The Flash’ now plays in theaters.
