Toho Revives ‘The Human Vapor’ — New Trailer Showcases ‘Godzilla Minus One’ VFX Magic
A classic Toho story is getting a new life on Netflix. The Human Vapor, one of the studio’s most famous science-fiction properties, is returning as a brand-new series that will be released worldwide on July 2.
Netflix announced the project with a teaser trailer. According to information shared by Netflix and the production team, this is not a direct remake of the original 1960 movie. Instead, it tells a completely new story inspired by the film’s main idea: a man who can transform his body into gas.
The upcoming series is the result of a major collaboration between Japanese and Korean creators. It is being produced with support from Toho, Netflix, and WOWPOINT, bringing together talent from both countries for a modern take on the classic concept.
One of the biggest attractions behind the project is its visual effects team. According to the production details released with the announcement, the effects work is being handled by Shirogumi, the award-winning studio that gained worldwide attention for its work on Godzilla Minus One. The creators say the series combines practical sets with advanced CGI to create a more realistic and intense experience for viewers.
The creative team behind the show includes some well-known names. The series is written and executive produced by Yeon Sang-ho, the filmmaker behind Train to Busan, Hellbound, and Parasyte: The Grey. Directing duties are handled by Shinzo Katayama, whose previous work includes the dark drama series Gannibal.
The creators have explained that the show should be viewed as a fresh interpretation of the original idea rather than a traditional remake. Their goal is to take the concept in a new direction and build it into a modern thriller.
The title character is played by UTA, who is making his acting debut in the series. According to the production team, he was selected from a large group of candidates. His character has the terrifying ability to turn into gas and move through any obstacle. Using these powers, he carries out a series of attacks that leave authorities struggling to respond.
The series also features a strong supporting cast. Shun Oguri stars as detective Kenji Okamoto, the investigator leading the search for the mysterious figure. Yu Aoi plays journalist Kyoko Kono, who is determined to uncover the truth behind the growing crisis. Suzu Hirose and Kento Hayashi portray siblings who livestream events as they become caught in the middle of the unfolding chaos. Yutaka Takenouchi appears as a former yakuza member who is now a successful company president.
The story begins with a shocking incident broadcast live on television. A person suddenly expands and explodes in front of viewers, creating panic across the country. Authorities soon discover that the Human Vapor is responsible. As he continues to announce future attacks before carrying them out, fear spreads rapidly and social order begins to break down.
The Human Vapor will consist of eight episodes and will stream exclusively on Netflix. With a well-known creative team, large-scale visual effects, and a new take on a classic Toho property, the series is shaping up to be one of Netflix’s biggest international genre releases of the summer.
