Tom Holland’s Spider-Man has always been the scrappy, wiry version of the hero, but that changed the moment ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ hit screens. Fans immediately clocked a bigger, more chiseled Peter Parker, and the internet has not stopped talking about it since.

The transformation is not just a costume trick this time around. Holland is only five foot eight, so matching the hulking scale of stars like Chris Hemsworth was never realistic, but he is now visibly carrying more size through his shoulders, arms and chest. That shift is the whole story fueling this conversation.

How Tom Holland Built His ‘Brand New Day’ Physique

In the past, a padded and CGI assisted costume did a lot of the heavy lifting for Holland’s Spider-Man look, but it seems he no longer wants or needs that help. Speaking about his goals ahead of filming, Holland explained that his focus had shifted away from staying lean toward actually bulking up so he could fill out the suit himself.

He put it plainly, saying the suits in these movies are often padded and then CGI gets added to make the padding move naturally, but he wanted to add enough muscle that the padding and CGI would not be necessary. That mindset shift is a big deal for an actor who spent nearly a decade being known for a slighter frame.

To get there, Holland used a mix of bodyweight work, weighted vest training and traditional bodybuilding to add size without sacrificing the athleticism his Spider-Man performance depends on. At one point he estimated he still had around four kilograms of muscle left to gain, and based on how he looks on screen now, it is clear he hit that mark.

The ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Workout Behind the Transformation

Much of Holland’s preparation was overseen by celebrity trainer Duffy Gaver, a former Navy SEAL who has worked with several Marvel stars over the years. Gaver has repeatedly emphasized movement quality and athletic performance over pure bodybuilding aesthetics, and that philosophy shows in how Holland’s body looks built to move rather than just built for photos.

One workout in particular has become something of a legend among fans, a 1,500 rep bodyweight ladder that Holland reportedly used every Monday morning to kick off his week. Holland described the structure himself, starting with one pull up, two dips, three press ups, four sit ups and five squats, building all the way up to ten reps per move before working back down to one.

Holland has also leaned heavily on CrossFit style training, favoring bodyweight exercises, high intensity circuits, gymnastics and functional strength work over heavy traditional lifting. Among his favorites is the classic “Cindy” workout, a twenty minute AMRAP built entirely around pull ups, push ups and squats, and Holland has said he sometimes paces himself by doing one round every minute on the minute.

The overall mission was different this time, aiming to create a body that could survive long stunt days and explosive fight choreography while still looking lean enough to convincingly play Peter Parker. That balance between raw strength and screen believability seems to be exactly what audiences are responding to.

Diet and Recovery Changes That Fueled the New Look

According to fitness coverage of his prep, Holland has said his results ultimately came down to roughly eighty percent diet and twenty percent fitness, which lines up with years of him training hard without seeing major changes in his physique. For ‘Brand New Day’ he reportedly got far more intentional about actually eating enough to grow, adding creatine into his routine and prioritizing better sleep and recovery through sobriety.

That nutritional overhaul appears to be the missing piece from his earlier Marvel outings. For years he had been doing high intensity training that burned through massive calories while barely eating one full meal a day, which meant the training volume alone was never going to be enough to add real size.

Why the ‘Brand New Day’ Physique Reveal Is Such a Big Deal for Fans

The timing of this physical glow up has not hurt the film’s momentum either. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has already pulled in 927 million dollars globally within its first four days, surpassing ‘The Odyssey’ at the box office. That haul also made it the second biggest global opening in box office history, breaking multiple franchise records along the way.

The film marks Holland’s fourth solo outing as the web slinger and his seventh appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe overall, and it picks up after the events of 2021’s ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home.’ Given how long fans have followed this version of Peter Parker, seeing him look this different physically hits differently than a random costume update might.

What do you think is driving more of the excitement around ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ the record breaking box office numbers or Tom Holland finally filling out that suit on his own?
