If we look at the first three movies the franchise spawned so far, we can’t really say that Sony’s Spider-Man Universe is standing on solid ground. The first Venom movie was commercially successful, but it received mixed reviews. Its sequel also didn’t sit well with the critics, and it grossed much less than its predecessor, although we need to remember that Venom 2 was released during the pandemic and was one of the most successful movies of the pandemic era.

However, the latest installment in the franchise, Morbius, was an absolute failure. The movie starring Jared Leto in the title role was panned by critics and grossed only $167 million worldwide, and that’s even after it was re-released in theaters. Still, Sony won’t let that discourage them from building their own cinematic universe with Marvel characters they own rights to, so in the future, we can expect Kraven the Hunter, Madame Webb, El Muerto, and Venom 3.

Venom 3 production start date

Venom 3 has been in development for quite a while now, and Tom Hardy is set to reprise the titular role, and Kelly Marcel is set to direct in her directorial debut. The movie’s plot and release date are still under wraps, but according to FTIA – Production List, the principal photography for Venom 3 should start on June 5, 2023.

The original Venom movie was released in 2018. Despite the mixed critical response, the movie grossed $856.1 worldwide. Its sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Morbius, was set to be released in 2020 before the pandemic of COVID-19 struck and paralyzed movie theaters. Venom 2 was eventually released in October 2021. Although it was obvious it won’t be able to earn as much as the original, it grossed $506.9 million, making it one of the most successful movies released during the pandemic.

Tom Hardy will reprise the role again in Venom 3, but it’s still unknown where Sony is exactly going with this shared universe. The post-credit scene of Morbius brought Michael Keaton’s Vulture to the franchise, although that received criticism from fans. Sony is now planning to change the game a bit with Kraven the Hunter, which will be the first R-rated Sony Marvel movie, and as for Madame Webb and El Muerto, we have no idea what those are about, but let’s hope Sony will surprise us.

Currently, the best Marvel content we’re getting from Sony is the Spider-Verse animated franchise. The second installment, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, is set to be released on June 2, 2023, and Sony and Marvel Studios are also developing the fourth Spider-Man movie set in Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe.
