‘Young Sherlock’ Just Overhauled Its Cast for Season 2, and Some Familiar Faces Won’t Be Coming Back
Prime Video’s mystery drama has spent its first season building a devoted following with its stylish, action-driven take on literature’s most famous detective as a teenager. Now, as the show gears up for round two, the series is undergoing a significant creative shake-up that’s already got fans buzzing about what’s next for young Sherlock Holmes.
‘Young Sherlock,’ created for television by Matthew Parkhill and executive produced by Guy Ritchie, reimagines the formative years of the iconic detective as he begins developing the skills that will eventually make him legendary. The first season proved to be a genuine hit for the streamer, reportedly reaching 45 million viewers within its first 28 days of release.
That success is clearly informing how Prime Video is approaching the show’s second outing. According to Deadline, the series is adding four major new names to its cast as series regulars: Olivia Williams of ‘Dune: Prophecy,’ Sophie Skelton of ‘Outlander,’ Indira Varma of ‘The Night Manager,’ and Aidan Gillen of ‘Game of Thrones.’
Details about who these actors will actually be playing are being kept tightly under wraps for now, leaving fans to speculate about how these new faces might reshape the mystery at the center of Season 2. What is clear is that the new additions join a returning core cast led by Hero Fiennes Tiffin as the titular character, alongside Dónal Finn as James Moriarty and Natascha McElhone, Max Irons, and Holly Cattle rounding out Sherlock’s family circle as his mother, brother, and sister.
Not everyone from Season 1 is making the jump forward, however. Zine Tseng, who played the show’s female lead Xiao Wei, also known as Princess Gulun Shou’an, will not be returning for the new season after her character’s arc wrapped up cleanly in the Season 1 finale.
Guy Ritchie is once again stepping behind the camera to direct the season’s opening episode while continuing on as an executive producer, maintaining the same creative blueprint that helped define the show’s distinctive visual style in its debut run. Production on Season 2 has officially begun, following the announcement of these new additions.
Aidan Gillen arrives with an especially packed résumé heading into the role, having recently taken on a major part in Taylor Sheridan’s ‘Mayor of Kingstown’ for Paramount+. He’s also set to appear alongside Angelina Jolie in the film ‘Sunny,’ along with upcoming television roles in ‘Tall Tales & Murder’ for the BBC and ‘Saviour’ for ITV.
The rest of the new cast brings their own significant genre credentials to the table as well. Williams and Varma both previously starred together in ‘Dune: Prophecy,’ while Skelton spent years building a devoted fanbase through her role in the long-running ‘Outlander’ franchise, giving ‘Young Sherlock’ a genuinely stacked bench of talent heading into its sophomore season.
With filming now underway and the show’s creative team clearly leaning into a more expansive ensemble for Season 2, expectations are high that this new mystery will build meaningfully on the momentum established by the first season’s strong viewership numbers. Exactly how these new characters will factor into Sherlock’s ongoing development remains one of the season’s most closely guarded secrets.
Given how much mystery still surrounds the new characters’ identities, fans have plenty to speculate about before Season 2 eventually arrives.
