How Keanu Reeves Chose the Name That Became John Wick
The John Wick franchise has become one of the most important action series of the last decade, combining stylish visuals with intense, stunt-heavy storytelling. Keanu Reeves stars as the legendary hitman whose quiet life is shattered after his dog is killed.
That personal tragedy sets him on a path through a secret world of assassins, making the films more than just action—they’ve become a cultural phenomenon. After the huge success of John Wick: Chapter 4, fans were curious if the story would continue.
In a talk with EW, Reeves explained that the fourth film was always meant to be the character’s ending. “From the start, we wanted to find a reason to continue the story, and we settled on exploring John Wick’s journey to death,” he said.
Reeves and director Chad Stahelski focused on one big question: “Why? Why make it?” Their answer was simple—they wanted to tell a story about John’s mortality that felt real and natural.
Interestingly, the series almost had a completely different name. The first movie was originally called Scorn. Reeves says he accidentally started calling it John Wick in interviews and at press events.
The marketing team realized the mistake was actually a big help, giving the film millions of dollars in free publicity. Creator Derek Kolstad admitted it was lucky. “It’s now hard to imagine the film being called anything else,” he said, since John Wick has become inseparable from the character himself.
Reeves has continued to expand his career while still honoring the John Wick universe. Earlier this year, he made his Broadway debut in Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot at the Hudson Theatre.
He starred alongside Alex Winter, his longtime Bill & Ted co-star. The run sold out and was praised for both the comedy and the depth Reeves and Winter brought to the production. Fans can also expect Reeves back in the Wick universe soon.
He will appear in the spinoff From the World of John Wick: Ballerina this March. The film stars Ana de Armas as a vengeful assassin and takes place between the third and fourth movies. Reeves is also set to star in the upcoming black comedy The Entertainment System Is Down, alongside Kirsten Dunst and other notable actors.
From stage roles to blockbuster action films, Keanu Reeves continues to prove he can do it all. His career bridges serious theater, major Hollywood franchises, and now ambitious spinoffs, showing that he remains one of the most versatile actors of his generation.
