Jim Carrey has spent the past few years living far from the Hollywood spotlight. He announced his retirement in 2022 and has since seemed more interested in painting, his spiritual life and family than in press tours. That made his rare public appearance in Paris this year feel like an event in itself.

The occasion was the 51st César Awards on Feb. 26 at L’Olympia, where Carrey received the honorary César, succeeding Julia Roberts. Michel Gondry, who directed him in ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’, introduced him on stage. Carrey spent months preparing a speech delivered entirely in French, and it brought the room to its feet.

That speech turns out to have been a prelude to something bigger. On Wednesday, Sept. 30, a spokesperson confirmed to People that Carrey has married his longtime girlfriend, Min Ah.

The wedding comes 7 months after the couple made their debut together at the César Awards. Few details have been shared. TMZ reported that the ceremony was a small, private affair in Los Angeles, while the representative did not reveal specifics about the event.

It is Carrey’s third marriage. He was previously married to Melissa Womer from 1987 to 1995, and they share a daughter, Jane Erin Carrey. He later wed his ‘Dumb and Dumber’ co-star Lauren Holly in 1996, though that marriage lasted only about a year.

Min Ah keeps a deliberately small public profile. She is a Los Angeles-based actress and artist, also known as Minzi, according to reports. The pair were first photographed together in February 2022 leaving a charity comedy show hosted by Judd Apatow at Largo in Los Angeles.

Beyond that, little is known about the timeline of their relationship, and Carrey has generally kept his personal life private. Before Min Ah, he was linked to his ‘Kidding’ co-star Ginger Gonzaga. His long relationship with Jenny McCarthy ran from 2005 to 2010.

The César Awards were the first time the world truly saw Carrey and Min Ah together. At the ceremony, Carrey called her his “sublime companion” in a speech delivered entirely in French, as Variety reported. The audience applauded as his daughter, his grandson Jackson and Min Ah were each acknowledged.

He also paid tribute to his late father, Percy Joseph Carrey, crediting him with teaching him the value of love, generosity and laughter. The César Awards’ general delegate, Gregory Caulier, later told Variety that Carrey’s visit had been planned since the summer and that he worked on the French speech for months. Carrey brought his partner, daughter, grandson and 12 close friends and family members.

The appearance also set off a wave of social media conspiracy theories, with some users insisting the man on stage was not really Carrey. Caulier dismissed the rumors as a non-issue and called the night a historic moment. In hindsight, the speech reads as a sweet public acknowledgment of a relationship that is now official.

With the wedding confirmed, the focus returns to Carrey’s quiet new chapter. He has stepped back from Hollywood and appears content with a smaller life, though his César appearance showed he can still captivate a crowd. Fans who remember him from ‘The Mask’, ‘The Truman Show’ and ‘Bruce Almighty’ are now celebrating a personal milestone rather than a film role.

The privacy surrounding the marriage fits the way the couple has handled their relationship all along. There was no elaborate engagement story and no leaked wedding photos. For now, that restraint may be the most telling part of the news.

What do you think of their decision to keep the wedding so private?
