When ‘Avengers: Endgame’ hit China in 2019, it didn’t just open big. It reshaped what a Hollywood blockbuster could do in the world’s second-biggest film market, and every Marvel release since has been measured against it.

Now, with the next big team-up on the horizon, early interest numbers suggest ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ may be getting close to that benchmark in China. For a franchise that has had a bumpy stretch since, it’s an encouraging sign.

To understand why the comparison matters, it helps to remember what ‘Avengers: Endgame’ did there. The film set a single-day record in China with $107.2 million on its opening day, including $28.2 million from midnight preview screenings.

Theaters scheduled screenings every 15 minutes around the clock, and the film earned RMB 1 billion in just 45 hours. Audiences loved it too, giving it a 9.3 out of 10 on Maoyan and 9.2 on Douban. Its three-day China start of $217 million topped the previous record held by ‘Avengers: Infinity War’.

That history is the backdrop for the latest numbers. On Maoyan, China’s largest online movie-ticketing platform, the ‘want-to-see’ count for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is nearing ‘Avengers: Endgame’ levels.

Compared at the same point, 69 days before release, the figures look like this:

  • ‘Avengers: Endgame’: 264K
  • ‘Avengers: Doomsday’: 253K
  • ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’: 196.8K

That puts ‘Doomsday’ about 11K short of ‘Endgame’, or roughly 96% of its mark. It also puts the new film well ahead of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, by more than 56K want-to-see marks.

Want-to-see counts measure interest, not tickets sold, so they are a signal rather than a forecast. Still, they are one of the few early gauges available this far out, and the gap to the franchise’s all-time peak is small.

The marketing push has been steady. Marvel has released four teaser trailers for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, and the film is described as being in post-production. The Russo brothers, who directed ‘Endgame’, are back in the director’s chair.

Robert Downey Jr. returns to the MCU, not as Tony Stark but as the villain Doctor Doom. The cast also includes Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Paul Rudd, Tom Hiddleston, Letitia Wright and Winston Duke, plus members of the recent ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ and ‘Thunderbolts’ casts and much of the Fox ‘X-Men’ cast.

Disney also gave fans a nostalgia boost. ‘Avengers: Endgame’ returned to theaters on September 25, and the Russos called it the greatest pre-game for ‘Doomsday’. The re-release also reminded audiences of the moment the full lineup of heroes assembles for the first time.

The timing is notable because there were worries about ‘Doomsday’ underperforming, given that Marvel has had some box office duds since ‘Endgame’. At the same time, The Hollywood Reporter has reported that the film is doing very well on long-lead tracking, according to its sources.

‘Endgame’ opened to $357.1 million in the United States and Canada, beating the $258.2 million debut of ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ by almost $100 million. Marvel’s other Avengers openings were $191.3 million for ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ and $207 million for 2012’s ‘The Avengers’.

China has been a major part of that story, and strong interest there would be a welcome sign for the studio. A big opening abroad could help offset some of the pressure that has built around the franchise.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is scheduled to open in the United States on December 18, 2026. It follows ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, which debuted on July 31, and it will be followed by ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ a year later.

Between now and then, expect more trailers, more tracking reports and plenty more comparisons to ‘Endgame’. If the want-to-see numbers keep climbing, that 11K gap could disappear well before opening day.

Do you think Avengers: Doomsday can match or surpass Avengers: Endgame at the box office?
