Every October, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures rolls out a red carpet that film fans and fashion watchers circle on the calendar. Once the arrivals wrap and the photos start circulating, a handful of looks end up driving the conversation. Kate Hudson’s Academy Museum Gala look is firmly in that group.

The annual fundraising event has become a reliably starry and glamorous affair, often described as a West Coast rival to New York’s Met Gala. This year’s edition was the 6th annual, held in Los Angeles on Saturday, October 17. The evening supports the museum’s exhibitions, public screenings and education programs.

Hudson arrived in a strapless champagne-colored gown that leaned into old Hollywood glamour. The figure-hugging design featured delicate crystal embellishments and dramatic sculptural ruffles cascading down one side.

The silhouette does most of the talking. The sparkling bodice fits close through the torso, then a sweeping, petal-like ruffle starts near the hip and curves down toward the hem. It reads like a piece of sculpture, and it looked especially striking against the soft, draped backdrop behind her.

Hudson kept everything else simple, which let the dress take center stage. Her blonde hair fell in long, glossy waves over one shoulder, and the warm blush tone of the gown made her look luminous under the lights. The effect was polished without feeling overworked.

Hudson wasn’t only a face on the carpet. She was part of the 2026 host committee, alongside names like Jessica Alba, Judd Apatow, Jon M. Chu, Kirsten Dunst, Rami Malek and Demi Moore.

The gala honored Charlize Theron with the Icon Award, Colman Domingo with the Vantage Award and John Carpenter with the Luminary Award. Taylor Swift was set to perform, and Robert Rodriguez, Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw served as co-chairs. That is a serious lineup, and it explains why the carpet was so crowded with talent.

Hudson had plenty of company in the style department. Demi Moore shone in a dramatic two-tone gown, while Charlize Theron turned heads in daring sheer black lace. Mia Goth, Pamela Anderson, Naomi Ackie, Curry Barker and Inde Navarrette were also among the guests.

Few of them, though, offered quite the same blend of softness and drama as Hudson’s gown. Where many looks went bold with color or sheer fabric, hers went for texture and shape.

This isn’t Hudson’s first memorable moment at the event. At the previous gala, she wore a structured butter yellow Stella McCartney gown with a strapless neckline and a plissé bodice. She also turned up to the museum’s opening gala in a Louis Vuitton cape dress that made her look like a superhero.

That history makes the new look feel like part of a pattern. She tends to pick designs with a strong architectural idea behind them, then wears them with an easy confidence.

The gala look lands at the end of a busy year for Hudson. She earned a Best Actress Oscar nomination for her role in ‘Song Sung Blue.’ On Oscar night, she wore a jade Giorgio Armani Privé bustier gown with ornate stone and crystal embroidery.

She also wore a bold red Prada gown with an off-the-shoulder neckline and corset detail to the BAFTAs. Against that run of red and jade, the soft champagne tone at the museum felt like a deliberate change of pace.

The gala also doubles as a celebration of cinema itself. Theron was set to take part in a conversation with the museum’s teen council and a screening of ‘Mad Max: Fury Road,’ while Carpenter would host screenings of his films, including ‘Halloween.’ Those programs tie into the museum’s new exhibition, The Horror Show.

It’s a reminder that the glamour has a purpose, since the proceeds help fund the museum’s programming. Last year’s gala raised more than $12 million.
