Both Marvel and DC have hot offers for the fans this June. Sony’s Marvel movie ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ is now in theaters, and Disney+’s ‘Secret Invasion’ series will premiere later this month. As for DC, their only but still very strong offer is the long-anticipated DCEU movie ‘The Flash,’ which is arguably one of the most important DC movies in the last few years.

Due to its Multiversal premise, this movie is announced as the breaking point between DCEU and DCU, which will serve as the soft-reboot of the former once it kicks off next year with ‘Creature Commandos’ on Max and ‘Superman: Legacy’ on the big screen in 2025. ‘The Flash’ will see not only the return of Ezra Miller’s Scarlet Speedster but also the long-awaited return of Michael Keaton as Batman and the debut of Sasha Calle in the role of Supergirl.

Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman was Sasha Calle’s inspiration to play Supergirl!

With ‘The Flash’ movie just around the corner, the cast and crew have a lot of work promoting the movie. Black Girl Nerds recently spoke with the director Andy Muschietti, the producer Barbara Muschietti, and the movie’s star Sasha Calle. Calle was asked which female characters in the past inspired her to create her own incarnation of Supergirl, and Calle answered; apart from being a superhero fan in general, the biggest inspiration was Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman in her original movie in 2017.

“The biggest inspiration that I had was Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman in 2017. I watched that movie in theaters, and after that, I cut a little photo of her doing stunts in her Wonder Woman outfit, and I put her on my vision board. And I was like: “That’s what I want. I belong there as well.” Her representation allowed me to believe I could be that as well. And now she texts me, and that is a wild thing to experience.”

Supergirl vs. Wonder Woman: Which Powerhouse Would Win?

Sasha Calle is the third actress that portrays Supergirl in live-action. The original live-action Supergirl was Helen Slater in 1984’s ‘Supergirl’ movie, which was a critical and commercial failure. In 2015, Melissa Benoist debuted as Supergirl in the homonymous TV series, which aired for six seasons until 2021. Although Benoist’s performance was praised, the series was criticized for its writing, particularly in later seasons. Calle previously revealed that she talked with Benoist about playing the next Supergirl in live-action.

James Gunn undoubtedly has big plans for Supergirl in the upcoming DCU, considering that the ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ movie has already been announced. The catch is, with everything going on with DCU replacing DCEU, we don’t know for sure if Calle will continue to play Supergirl in DCU since we know that Superman’s role will be recast and Calle debuts as Supergirl in a franchise where Henry Cavill’s incarnation of Man of Steel still exists.

Directed by Andy Muschietti, ‘The Flash’ will hit theaters worldwide on June 16, 2023.
