Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 has arrived on Netflix, and critics are already sharing their thoughts on the next chapter of Aang’s live-action journey. While some reviewers believe the series has improved and delivers an entertaining fantasy adventure, others feel the adaptation still struggles to capture the magic of the original animated show.

According to Rotten Tomatoes, Season 2 currently holds a 63% Tomatometer score based on early critic reviews. The reactions are mixed, with several critics praising the cast, action scenes, and improvements from the first season, while others argue that the show still has major storytelling problems.

The new season continues Aang’s mission as the young Avatar works to master the elements and prepare for the battle against Fire Lord Ozai. Along with Katara and Sokka, Aang travels across the Four Nations while trying to convince the Earth King to join their fight against the Fire Nation. All seven episodes were released on Netflix on June 25.

One of the more positive reviews came from Collider’s Idan Kelley, who gave the season a 7/10 score. Kelley praised the return to the world of Avatar, writing that “on the whole, Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 is a worthwhile return to the Four Nations as the ambitious live-action remake gears up for its final chapter.”

Screen Rant also gave the season a positive reaction, with Lewis Glazebrook scoring it 7/10. The review noted that the series does not surpass the original animated version but remains enjoyable, calling it “well-made, mostly well-acted, and infectiously enjoyable.”

Some critics highlighted the improvements made after the first season. But Why Tho’s LaNeysha Campbell gave the show a 7.5/10 score, saying Season 2 “does a great job of improving upon itself, delivering an impressive continuation that pays homage to the source material while also enriching its story and characters.”

Ready Steady Cut was also impressed, giving the season 4/5 stars. Critic Jonathon Wilson described it as “an impressive and engaging work of action-fantasy with real charm,” adding that the series learned from the problems of its first season.

However, not every critic was convinced. Inverse’s Lyvie Scott gave the season a negative review, arguing that the adaptation does not fully use its talented cast. Scott wrote that “it’s a waste of a cast that’s always been game to tell this story right.”

TV Guide was even more critical, with Gavia Baker-Whitelaw giving the season a 3.5/10 score. The review claimed that the biggest issue is that the show can become boring to watch, despite the large production and famous source material.

FandomWire also shared a negative opinion, giving Season 2 a 5/10 score. The outlet compared parts of the series to “the most expensive cosplay recap sketch ever made,” suggesting that the adaptation sometimes feels too close to the original without adding enough new ideas.

Despite the divided reactions, several critics agree that Season 2 represents progress compared to the first season. The performances, especially from the young cast, remain one of the strongest parts of the show, while the larger battles and expanded fantasy world continue to attract fans.

With Netflix already preparing the final season, the response to Season 2 could play an important role in how audiences view the conclusion of Aang’s live-action story. For now, Avatar: The Last Airbender remains a series that has impressed some critics while leaving others still waiting for the adaptation to fully find its own identity.
