Even the international rollout has been jaw dropping. The worldwide haul broke down to $124.5 million from North America and $139.6 million from international markets, making it the biggest global opening of Nolan’s career. In India specifically, ‘The Odyssey’ collected around 73 crore gross, or roughly $7.5 million, becoming Nolan’s highest-grossing opening weekend ever in that country.

Nolan isn’t the only one celebrating a personal milestone here. The film’s opening has also become Matt Damon’s highest-grossing domestic launch of his career, a title that previously belonged to a very different kind of action franchise.

For nearly twenty years, that record sat with ‘The Bourne Ultimatum,’ which opened to $69.2 million. Even after adjusting for inflation, that 2007 opening would land around $111 million, a number ‘The Odyssey’ still comfortably clears. Not every review has been glowing, of course. Some smaller outlets pushed back on the film’s tone and casting choices, though those critiques have largely been drowned out by the wave of positive coverage. Notably, none of Nolan’s 13 films to date carry the dreaded Rotten status, and ‘The Odyssey’ only adds to that streak.

The IMAX Release Is Breaking Format Records Too

Part of what made ‘The Odyssey’ such an event was its presentation. The film was shot entirely with IMAX 70mm film cameras, making it the first ever theatrical release filmed completely on IMAX equipment, and that format bet paid off immediately at the box office.

According to IMAX Corporation, the premium format alone contributed enormously to the film’s total. The Odyssey’s IMAX release delivered $52 million, accounting for 20 percent of the film’s global opening weekend. That kind of format specific performance is almost unheard of outside of tentpole franchise releases.

The ripple effect has already reached audiences directly. Because of the film’s IMAX exclusive shooting process, many moviegoers have started campaigning for more IMAX screens in their local theaters.
