Taylor Sheridan’s recent appearance on The Howard Stern Show explained that his exit from Sons of Anarchy came down to money, workload, and a shift in how he viewed his future in Hollywood. Sheridan, who appeared in the first two seasons of the FX series, said he ultimately decided to walk away after failing to reach a salary agreement with the production.

Sons of Anarchy, which aired from 2008 to 2014 on FX, follows an outlaw motorcycle club operating in the fictional California town of Charming. Sheridan’s character was written out at the start of Season 3 after his departure.

On the podcast, Sheridan explained that even though the show was successful, his pay did not match the workload or the show’s popularity. He said, “I’m literally would leave the set of that show and go to my other job ’cause I didn’t make enough on that show to pay my rent and live.”

He added that after Season 2 ended, he made a direct request for a raise. According to Sheridan, he told producers, “Guys, I’m not coming back and doing this again for this price. I’m just not doing it. I want what the other 14 people… not even asking for what Charlie gets or Katey or Ron Perlman. I just want what the other 11 guys are getting.”

Sheridan described the pay structure at the time as relatively low, even for a successful cable show. He said many supporting actors were making around $20,000 per episode before taxes and fees. When he asked for an increase, he said the offer he received was not enough to justify returning.

He recalled that the production countered with a smaller raise and a reduced episode guarantee. Sheridan said they offered him a lower increase with fewer guaranteed episodes, which he did not accept. He said, “That’s not a raise. What is that? And I said, ‘No.’”

One of the turning points, according to Sheridan, was realizing how easily his role could be replaced. He described a response from a studio representative who suggested that his character could simply be recast. Sheridan said that moment made him feel “imminently replaceable,” which changed how he viewed his place in the industry.

He also explained that the situation affected how he thought about his personal life and priorities. He said he did not want to continue missing family time for work that did not financially support him in a meaningful way. That realization pushed him to make a bigger decision about his career.

Sheridan said, “I just realized I’ve maxed out what I can do as an actor in this industry, so I’m not going to try to do it anymore.” He added that the experience made him shift his focus toward writing and creating his own stories instead of acting under others’ control.

After leaving Sons of Anarchy, Sheridan transitioned into screenwriting and later became one of the most influential creators in television, building series such as Yellowstone and its related spin-offs.

Reflecting on his decision, Sheridan framed it as a turning point rather than a setback. While the exit ended his acting role on a hit show, it marked the beginning of a new phase in his career where he moved behind the camera to take control of his own projects.
