With the upcoming release of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ fans are hoping that the movie will open the floodgates of X-Men to the MCU. Although Professor X has already debuted in the MCU, fans are waiting for that variant that will stay and take part in several stories. Now there are many potential candidates for the role, and one name stands out Giancarlo Esposito, who we more frequently see in the role of a villain instead of in the role of a benevolent leader with humanity’s best interests at heart.

Esposito recently commented on the potential role during his guest appearance on the Fade To Black podcast and as it turns out he would love to play Charles Xavier but doesn’t like one aspect of the character that at the same time makes him extremely recognizable:

It would be great to play Professor X in some other incarnation than just the wheelchair,’ right? Because the physical idea of being in a wheelchair every single day does not appeal to me. I just don’t feel that old and I don’t like to sit that much. But certainly we could figure something out. Maybe. Professor X wasn’t always in the wheelchair, but that is part of his character development.

Esposito is right, Xavier wasn’t always in the wheelchair and there are different takes on how he lost control of his legs depending on whether you cite comics or Fox’s X-Men franchise, but if we’re going by the comics, Mutant Resurrection Protocol allowed Professor X to be free of the wheelchair for years now and it’s no longer one of the trademarks of the character, at least in the comics.

In the MCU, I believe that he might also play a different variant of Professor X, perhaps something that would distinguish him from the aforementioned X-Men franchise. What do you think? Could Esposito make it work? Let us know in the comments below!
