Followed with huge anticipation and faith that it can bring back the taste of pre-Endgame MCU, James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 became the biggest blockbuster of this Summer season. The movie grossed $843 million worldwide, which currently makes him the second highest-grossing movie this year. The movie gathered positive reviews, with many praising Gunn’s direction and the emotional touch that Rocket’s origin story brought.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is the final movie of this trilogy and James Gunn’s final Marvel movie. As we know, James Gunn is currently working as the co-CEO of DC Studios, and all of his next projects will be based on DC Comics, starting with the ‘Creature Commandos’ animated series next year and ‘Superman: Legacy’ in 2025.

Of course, even though Gunn and MCU parted ways, it is expected that Guardians of the Galaxy, at least those members that remained on the team, will eventually return. Additionally, although he left the team to return to Earth, Star-Lord’s return was also announced in the movie’s post-credit scene.

Here’s when ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ will premiere on Disney+

The latest MCU flick had a successful theatrical run, grossing over $843 million worldwide, which is more than the original movie’s $773 million but a bit less than 2017’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,’ which grossed 869 million. With two and a half months since the premiere in theaters, Marvel Studios officially announced today that ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ will be streaming on Disney+ on August 2, 2023.

‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ takes place after the events of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ and ‘The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special,’ which premiered exclusively on Disney+ last year. The movie depicts the titular team’s latest adventure as Star-Lord, Nebula, Drax, Mantis, and Groot team up with the alternate Gamora from ‘Avengers: Endgame’ to save Rocket’s life after his encounter with Adam Warlock. During the movie’s flashback scenes, the audience is introduced to Rocket’s origin story and his past with the movie’s villain, the High Evolutionary.

Guardians of the Galaxy first joined the MCU in 2014 when Marvel Studios thought their brand was strong and popular enough to introduce less-known characters to the big screen. And it turned out they were right. The first movie was an absolutely critical and commercial success, and the sequel, which was released three years later, was met with comparable success, although it was deemed slightly inferior to the original.

The third installment of the Guardians saga was met with troublesome production since James Gunn was initially fired from the project and then brought back after DC decided to hire him for ‘The Suicide Squad.’ His other projects and the pandemic postponed the development of ‘Vol. 3,’ but the movie was finally released after six long years of waiting. What’s interesting, the movie will arrive on Disney+ exactly nine years since the original ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ movie premiered worldwide.

Written and directed by James Gunn, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,’ will be streaming on Disney+ on August 2, 2023.
