Awards season typically does not start heating up until the fall, but 2026 has been throwing that timeline out the window for one particular breakout performance. Jaafar Jackson’s turn as his own uncle in the Michael Jackson biopic Michael has been quietly building momentum for months, collecting nominations well before the traditional campaign season even kicks off.

The film itself has become one of the year’s most talked about box office stories, continuing to post strong numbers in markets around the world long after its initial release. That commercial success has now been matched by growing industry recognition, and this week brought the biggest validation yet for its young leading man.

The Hollywood Creative Alliance announced Jackson as the winner of Best Actor at the 2026 Astra Midseason Movie Awards, beating out a competitive field that included Chiwetel Ejiofor for Backrooms, Leo Woodall for Tuner, Ralph Fiennes for 28 Years Later, The Bone Temple, Robert Pattinson for The Drama, and Ryan Gosling for Project Hail Mary, who finished as runner-up.

It marks a significant milestone for an actor who was relatively unknown before stepping into one of the most scrutinized biopic roles in recent memory.

Jackson was not the only member of Michael’s cast to walk away with hardware, as Colman Domingo also took home Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Joe Jackson, the family patriarch. Domingo prevailed over a field that included Dustin Hoffman, Dylan O’Brien, Edward Norton, Jack O’Connell, and James Ortiz, giving the film two acting victories in a single ceremony.

That double win places Michael among the stronger performers of the night, even as Project Hail Mary emerged as the evening’s biggest overall winner, taking home Best Picture and Best Director honors for Phil Lord and Chris Miller. Still, having both of its lead performances recognized speaks to just how thoroughly Jackson and Domingo’s work has resonated with voters this early in the year.

Unlike more traditional year-end ceremonies, the Astra Midseason Movie Awards exist specifically to spotlight standout films and performances released during the first half of the calendar year. The idea is to offer an early temperature check on what could remain part of the awards conversation once the fall campaign season fully kicks into gear.

Other winners on the night included Inde Navarrette, who took home Best Actress for her performance in the horror sensation Obsession, and Penelope Cruz, who won Best Supporting Actress for The Invite. The Invite also claimed Best Screenplay, while Leviticus was named Best Independent Feature, and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey was voted the year’s Most Anticipated Film for the back half of 2026.

For an actor taking on the challenge of portraying one of the most famous entertainers in history, and doing so as his own family member, this kind of early recognition carries real weight heading into the more competitive months ahead. Landing a nomination before the ceremony was already being treated as a notable achievement, and turning that into an outright win only strengthens the case for Jackson as a genuine awards contender this season.

With Michael continuing to perform well internationally and now backed by two Astra wins, the film appears well-positioned to remain part of the broader conversation as voters begin weighing their options for the major ceremonies later this year. Whether that momentum carries all the way through to nominations from bigger organizations remains to be seen, but this is about as strong a starting point as any awards hopeful could ask for.
