Olivia Wilde’s ‘The Invite’ Press Tour Is Revealing the Heart Behind Her Wildest Comedy Yet
Olivia Wilde has spent the past several years building a reputation as one of the more ambitious filmmakers of her generation, moving from the coming-of-age charm of ‘Booksmart’ to the unsettling ambition of ‘Don’t Worry Darling.’ Each project has pushed her in a different direction, and her latest effort continues that pattern in an entirely new genre.
That latest project is ‘The Invite,’ a marital comedy Wilde both directs and stars in alongside Seth Rogen, Penelope Cruz, and Edward Norton. The story follows a struggling couple whose dinner party with their enigmatic upstairs neighbors spirals into something neither of them expected, adapted from the Spanish film ‘The People Upstairs.’
With the film now expanding into wide release, Wilde has been stepping out for a fresh round of press appearances and promotional photos, giving fans another look at the woman behind one of this year’s more talked about comedies. The renewed press push comes after ‘The Invite’ already built serious momentum earlier in the year, starting with its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January.
That premiere reportedly kicked off one of the festival’s biggest bidding wars, eventually landing the film at A24 for distribution. Critics have continued to respond warmly since then, with reviews praising the chemistry between the four leads and calling the film a sophisticated farce that reaffirms Wilde as one of the more exciting voices working in comedy today.
The film first opened in limited release on June 26 before expanding nationwide, giving audiences outside major markets their first real chance to see it for themselves. That wider rollout has coincided with Wilde making the media rounds again, this time with a noticeably more personal angle to the conversation.
Much of that personal weight traces back to a quiet detail tucked into the film’s closing moments. Just before the credits roll, the screen flashes a simple message reading “For Diane,” a tribute to the late Diane Keaton, who died in October at the age of 79.
Wilde explained the dedication during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter at the film’s Los Angeles premiere, describing Keaton as a defining influence on the kind of character work she wanted to bring to the project. She explained that she considered Keaton one of the first actresses she recognized as representing a genuinely complex woman who never fit into a single archetype.

Wilde and Keaton previously worked together on the 2015 holiday comedy ‘Love the Coopers,’ where Keaton played her mother. That connection clearly stayed with Wilde well beyond the production itself, shaping how she approached crafting complicated, fully realized female characters in her own directing work.
How excited are you for The Invite?
With ‘The Invite’ now reaching a much wider audience nationwide, the film’s blend of sharp comedy and unexpectedly emotional undertones seems to be resonating with both critics and audiences alike. Between the starry ensemble cast and Wilde’s evolving voice as a filmmaker, the movie has quickly become one of the more distinctive comedies of the year.
As the promotional cycle continues, Wilde’s newest round of press appearances offers a glimpse of an artist clearly proud of what she built, even as she continues honoring the influences who helped shape her along the way.
