Brendan Wayne is best known to Star Wars fans as the body double for Din Djarin in The Mandalorian, helping bring Pedro Pascal’s iconic bounty hunter to life. Now, Wayne is speaking out about a different topic that has become a major part of modern fandom: toxic behavior within the Star Wars community.

During a recent conversation with MovieWeb, Wayne shared his thoughts on how some fans react when new Star Wars projects do not match their personal expectations. While he understands that everyone has different opinions, he believes some fans take criticism too far and forget that Star Wars belongs to a much larger audience.

“It’s interesting to see people who are pulling against the franchise they love, just because of their ownership… That can be 100% toxic in the Star Wars world,” Wayne said.

His comments came during a discussion about actor Ahmed Best and his return to the Star Wars universe. Best originally played Jar Jar Binks in the prequel trilogy, a character who became one of the most controversial figures in the franchise. Over the years, criticism of Jar Jar turned into personal attacks against Best himself, something the actor has previously described as one of the earliest examples of large-scale online harassment.

Many fans felt Best was unfairly treated for simply playing a role. Years later, Lucasfilm brought him back to Star Wars in The Mandalorian Season 3, where he played Jedi Master Kelleran Beq. The character quickly became a fan favorite after helping rescue Grogu during a flashback sequence.

Wayne praised the decision to bring Best back and said it felt like a meaningful moment for both the actor and longtime fans.

“It was payback for something that was owed to him, in my opinion,” Wayne explained. “I loved it, and it was incredible.”

According to Wayne, Best’s return showed how fan opinions can change over time and why people should be careful before attacking actors, filmmakers, or creative teams behind major franchises.

The discussion eventually shifted toward the broader Star Wars fandom. Wayne noted that the franchise is now operating in a very different environment than it did decades ago, especially since Disney acquired Lucasfilm. While he understands that not every movie or series will connect with every viewer, he believes fans should respect that others may enjoy projects they personally dislike.

Wayne pointed out that criticism is completely normal and even healthy. However, he believes problems begin when people try to act as if their version of Star Wars is the only one that matters.

“That’s like any movie, show, or theater performance,” he said. “It’s to be present and to watch it, and if you don’t connect, cool, but we don’t need to hear how bad you are, that they ruined your Star Wars.”

He ended with a message that many fans online have been discussing since the interview was published. “They didn’t ruin your Star Wars. It’s our Star Wars.”

Wayne’s comments have sparked conversations across social media, with many fans agreeing that the Star Wars community is strongest when different opinions can exist without turning into hostility. As the franchise continues to grow through new films, shows, and characters, Wayne hopes fans can focus less on gatekeeping and more on enjoying the galaxy they all share.
