‘The Boys’ has always been a show about power, corruption, and the cost of doing the right thing too late. Few characters embody that tension more completely than Queen Maeve, the disillusioned warrior who finally chose her conscience over her comfort, and paid a steep price for it. With the final season now airing, her absence is impossible to ignore.

As ‘The Boys’ barrels toward its explosive conclusion on Prime Video, fans have one recurring question that just will not quiet down. Where is Maeve, and does she have any role left to play in bringing Homelander down for good?

What Happened to Queen Maeve Before Season 5

After making a heroic sacrifice to stop Soldier Boy from detonating, Maeve was left injured, having lost an eye and her powers. She survived the explosion and quietly disappeared, choosing to start a new life and escaping with her girlfriend Elena while the world believed she was dead.

By the end of the third season, she realized there was a time to put aside her fears and act. She confronted Homelander despite understanding the risks involved, and in doing so demonstrated that she was far stronger than she had previously shown. She even managed to hurt Homelander, which is something rare for other characters throughout the series.

One such absence that has drawn attention is Queen Maeve, who retired from the fight against Vought in the season 3 ending after losing her powers. She then retreated with her partner Elena, and has not been seen since.

According to Wikipedia, Dominique McElligott’s credited run on ‘The Boys’ spans from 2019 to 2022, which aligns with her last on-screen appearance in the season 3 finale.

Eric Kripke’s Promise and the Maeve Question

In a 2022 interview with Deadline, showrunner Eric Kripke made it clear he had no intention of ending the series without Queen Maeve, stating plainly that the show would definitely not reach its conclusion without seeing her again.

Kripke also explained how crucial Maeve’s removal was for Annie, saying it was right narratively for Maeve to exit because she was too powerful and solved too many of Starlight’s problems. For Starlight to truly become the powerful character she is, she needed to remove all of her life preservers.

Ahead of the final season, Kripke spoke to SFX Magazine and teased a massive body count, warning fans not to get too attached to any single character, and noting that the battles ahead would come with real consequences and real casualties.

As of the early episodes of season 5, there is no official confirmation that Maeve will return. The series would also have to address how she gets her powers back, if she does appear at all.

How A-Train’s Death Opens the Door for Dominique McElligott

Episode 1 of the final season saw Jessie T. Usher’s A-Train die a quick death at the hands of Homelander. Not only does this leave the Boys one major assist short, but it also creates space for the team to potentially recruit another former Vought supe in Dominique McElligott’s Queen Maeve.

As much as Maeve probably wants to avoid getting dragged back into the drama, the wider situation has become exponentially worse since her exit. Like A-Train, her conscience may not let her sit back and do nothing while Homelander’s dictatorship rises around her.

It is worth noting that Maeve lost her powers after absorbing Soldier Boy’s blast at point-blank range. Whereas A-Train could zip around seeking out potential new recruits, Maeve’s contributions to any rebellion would be considerably less spectacular. As a former top-tier supe who could compete with Homelander himself for short periods, a fully-powered version of her would have been enormously helpful to Starlight’s cause.

Maeve’s Powers, the Supe Virus, and What a Return Could Look Like

Speculation around a possible return suggests the storyline might see the Boys and Starlight seek Maeve out to help them take down Homelander once and for all. The plot could also include Maeve’s internal conflict, especially after her tumultuous history with Vought. In what might be an eye-for-an-eye moment, there is a strong possibility of her taking on Homelander directly.

Nothing currently proves Maeve will make a return appearance in the upcoming episodes, partly because the focus of the show has shifted to greater events like Homelander’s increasing power and new Supes appearing. Moreover, without her supernatural abilities, her inclusion in the overarching narrative is genuinely complicated by the scale of the conflicts taking place.

‘The Boys’ season 5 takes place a year after season 4 following a significant time skip. In that year-long gap, a lot happened that resulted in Homelander becoming the pseudo-leader of the United States, and several characters who might have been expected to appear have so far remained absent.

Departed members of the Vought-sponsored roster of the Seven now include Queen Maeve, Starlight, Translucent, Lamplighter, Supersonic, Stormfront, and the original Black Noir before Homelander killed him. With Soldier Boy now added to the group’s new lineup, the show is clearly closing out its final chapters at full speed.

Why Maeve Still Matters to the Endgame of ‘The Boys’

Maggie Shaw, formerly known as Queen Maeve, is described as a warrior, a feminist, a humanitarian, and the second most powerful member of the Seven. Her story across the series has been one of a woman disillusioned and cynical, who became a shell of the determined idealist she once was, before eventually finding her way back.

One of the most powerful Supes in ‘The Boys,’ Maeve has more depth and better development in the series than in the comics, where she dies early. Over time she begins to see the truth and ultimately chooses to stand with the Boys to take down Homelander, making her arc one of the show’s most compelling through-lines.

Her character development already reached a logical endpoint when she left Vought’s scheme and achieved the freedom that had been her ultimate goal all along. Including her in the plot again could only work if the writers can find a way to return her powers or reframe what she brings to the table.

Whether Dominique McElligott rides back in for one final bow or stays quietly offscreen as the dust settles around Homelander, her shadow hangs over every episode of this last season. ‘The Boys’ drops new episodes weekly on Wednesdays on Prime Video, and there are still enough episodes left for Maeve to make her mark on the ending.
