June 2026 was a tough month for many television shows, with several series getting canceled by major networks and streaming platforms. From Netflix and Prime Video to Peacock, NBC, BBC, and HBO Max, more than a dozen projects were either officially canceled or quietly removed from development.

The cancellations affected both established shows and upcoming projects that never reached audiences. Some of the biggest surprises included the cancellation of Netflix’s The Boroughs, a series created by Stranger Things creators the Duffer Brothers, and Ponies, a spy thriller starring Emilia Clarke that received strong reviews from critics.

Netflix made several major cuts during the month. The streaming giant canceled Building the Band after just one season. The reality competition series gained attention because it featured the late One Direction singer Liam Payne, but the show will not continue with another season.

Netflix also decided not to move forward with The Boroughs after one season. The sci-fi series came from Matt and Ross Duffer, the creators behind Stranger Things, making the cancellation a surprise for many fans who expected the creative team’s involvement to give the show a longer run.

Another high-profile cancellation came from Peacock, which canceled Ponies after one season. The spy drama featured Emilia Clarke in a leading role and had a strong critical response, earning a 94% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite the positive reviews, the series was not renewed.

NBC also canceled The Hunting Party after two seasons. According to reports, Universal Television may attempt to find another home for the series instead of ending it completely.

Prime Video also ended Aubrey Plaza’s animated comedy Kevin after one season. Plaza shared the news with fans on Instagram and compared the situation to Parks and Recreation, a show that struggled early before becoming a major success.

The BBC also made a decision involving Ashley Cain: Into the Danger Zone. The broadcaster ended its relationship with the series after older social media posts from Cain containing offensive comments resurfaced.

Some projects were canceled before audiences ever had the chance to watch them. One of the biggest examples was Amazon’s planned Stargate television series. Executives decided not to continue with the project because they felt it would not attract enough viewers outside the existing Stargate fanbase.

The BBC also canceled plans for a Doctor Who 2026 Christmas special. Reports suggested that the franchise may not return with a new holiday episode until 2028 at the earliest, leaving fans waiting longer for the next major installment.

HBO Max also quietly stopped development on the Anon Pls. adaptation after spending around four years working on the project. The series was based on the popular book and had been in development for a long period before being shelved.

Canceled Netflix Crime Series Makes a Shocking Comeback With Fans

While many shows ended in June, some Netflix projects received different news. Devil May Cry was renewed for a third and final season, allowing the animated adaptation to conclude its story. Netflix also renewed A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder for a third and final season, which is expected to arrive in 2027.

The month also followed a wave of cancellations and final-season announcements from May 2026. Shows including Going Dutch, Brilliant Minds, Stumble, and Spartacus: House of Ashur received cancellation news during that period.

Meanwhile, several popular series confirmed that they would be ending with their upcoming final seasons. These included Euphoria, Emily in Paris, The Night Agent, and The Lincoln Lawyer.

The growing number of cancellations reflects the current challenges facing television and streaming platforms. Networks and streamers are becoming more selective about which shows they continue, often making decisions based on viewership numbers, production costs, and long-term audience potential.

For fans, June 2026 brought a mix of disappointing endings and a few planned conclusions. While some shows were cut short, others will have the chance to finish their stories with final seasons instead of ending without closure. As streaming services continue changing their strategies, more cancellations and renewals are expected throughout the rest of the year.
